Chapter 26
Overview
After Lowe's rejection, Misery is left emotionally wrecked and more rootless than ever. When Mick arrives because Lowe sent him, the ride quickly turns ominous: Mick avoids explaining what is happening with Ana, then drugs Misery without warning. The chapter shifts the story from romantic rupture to immediate physical danger and a deeper crisis of trust.
Summary
Alone in her apartment after Lowe rejects her, Misery collapses to the floor and struggles to absorb the pain. Her usual loneliness and the loss of Serena have hurt before, but this feels heavier and more unbearable because Lowe has become important to her.
Misery takes a quick shower and tries to pull herself together, but the buzzer soon rings. Mick tells her that Lowe asked him to come get her, and Misery gets into the car because she has nowhere else to go and no clear place to belong.
During the drive, Misery notices that Mick is upset and asks whether she can help him. Then Misery asks about Ana, already fearing that if Lowe is sending her away, she may never see the girl again. Mick says he has not talked to Ana and suggests that this distance is for the best, but he refuses to explain further and only says that the situation is complicated.
Misery reacts bitterly to hearing the same evasive answer Lowe used. Before Misery can make sense of what is happening, Mick suddenly injects her arm with a syringe. He apologizes softly as the drug takes effect, and Misery loses consciousness.
