Chapter 18
Overview
Ana's sudden illness exposes the danger of her mixed heritage, because Lowe cannot safely rely on either Were medicine or ordinary Human care without risking her secrecy. Misery's experience living with Serena lets her guide Ana's treatment, helping Ana improve and proving that Misery can protect Lowe's family in ways the pack cannot. The crisis also deepens Misery and Lowe's bond, while Misery's new suspicion about old Human-Were Bureau men pushes her investigation in a new direction.
Summary
On the flight home, Misery tries and fails to check the tracker remotely because the plane's Wi-Fi is too unreliable. Lowe speaks little, staying tightly focused on Ana, and Mick meets them with bad news: Ana developed a fever, bone pain, shivering, and vomiting soon after Lowe left. At the house, Juno, Cal, and Mick explain that full Weres are rarely affected by ordinary illness, which makes Ana's condition especially frightening because her half-Human body does not fit normal Were expectations.
Misery sits with Ana, cools her forehead, and tries to keep her calm with jokes. Lowe joins them with a stuffed giraffe and shows how protective and tender he is with Ana, especially when Ana says she misses her mother and resents that other children have parents while she has none. After another bout of retching, Lowe decides to take Ana into Human territory for discreet medical help, but Misery stops him and argues that moving Ana or exposing her to a doctor may be even riskier than treating her with Human medicines based on Serena's past illnesses. Juno supports Misery, and Lowe chooses to trust her judgment.
Lowe returns less than an hour later with the drugs Misery named, his bloody green knuckles suggesting he forced his way to what Ana needed without harming Humans. Misery crushes the pills and gives Ana a combination meant to help whether the illness is viral or bacterial, plus medicine to lower her fever. Once Ana is settled, Misery checks in with Alex, confirms the tracker on Emery is working, and asks him to start compiling the names of men who worked for the Human-Were Bureau years earlier. Ana's comments about parents make Misery suspect that Ana's father, or another Human man tied to the Bureau, may know more than everyone assumed. As Misery leaves, Alex realizes that she smells as if Lowe has marked her.
When Misery returns, Mick and Cal are gone, and Juno reports that Ana's fever has broken and that she is keeping liquids down. Juno credits Misery's medicine and remarks that Misery and Lowe make a surprisingly good team, confirming that Misery has earned even more trust inside the pack. The immediate danger has eased, but Lowe does not look relieved so much as deeply shaken.
In Misery's room, Lowe finally admits what truly frightened him: without Misery's knowledge, he would have had to choose between Ana's health and Ana's secrecy. Misery cannot honestly promise that Ana will always be safe, and Lowe's question forces both of them to face how uncertain Ana's future is. Instead of lying, Misery tells him the truth, and Lowe drops to his knees and buries his face in her lap. Misery comforts him in silence, and their relationship deepens into a more intimate form of trust, dependence, and emotional shelter.
