Misery spends five nights working with Alex, the nervous tech Lowe assigned to help her trace Serena’s disappearance. They reexamine Serena’s correspondence and cross-reference her recent contacts for Were ties, which produces a few leads but no breakthrough. Even so, the search makes Misery feel closer to Serena again, and Lowe’s daily check-ins stand out because he stays calm and respectful instead of threatening her over the lack of progress.

When Lowe is called away on urgent pack business and takes Alex with him, Misery is left idle until Juno approaches her on the porch after a run. Juno apologizes for how hostile she was when Misery arrived, explaining that she was trying to protect Ana and Lowe. Juno then shares painful pack history: Roscoe attacked Maria after she challenged him, Ana witnessed that violence, and Lowe was sent away at twelve to the Northwest pack with Koen because Roscoe felt threatened by him. Juno explains that Lowe later built a life elsewhere, only to give it up and return when Roscoe became unstable, which convinces Misery that duty has consumed nearly all of Lowe’s choices.

During that conversation, Misery admits that she knows Lowe supposedly has a mate, Gabrielle, because she learned it from one of Henry’s acquaintances at the wedding. Misery insists she does not want to stand in the way of Lowe’s happiness and says that she has already confessed her own hidden motive for the marriage to him. Juno seems startled by Misery’s assumptions, then says that, cruel as it may be, part of her had hoped Lowe would never find his mate because an Alpha must always put the pack first. The talk ends with a handshake and a cautious truce between Juno and Misery.

As the full moon approaches, Mick warns Misery to stay inside because even disciplined Weres are more dangerous, and younger ones may lose control around her unusual scent. The howling unsettles Misery, and Ana comes to hide with her in the closet because Lowe usually stays with Ana during these nights and is still away. Ana admits she is sad and asks when she will be able to shift like the other children; later she falls asleep after braiding Misery’s hair, and Misery realizes how protective she has become of her.

Lowe returns in the middle of the night, furious because he could not find Ana and was ready to punish everyone responsible for guarding the house. After confirming that Ana is safe, he tells Misery he has been dealing with internal pack matters and meetings with Human governor-elect Maddie and several Vampyre council members, including Henry. Misery asks whether the new alliances will hold, and the two briefly consider whether Ana could ever become a symbol of unity between Humans and Weres, though Lowe says the risk is too unpredictable. He takes the sleeping Ana away, then quietly tells Misery where to find a sharper knife, revealing both his awareness of her need to defend herself and his strange, growing accommodation of her.
