At dawn, Misery and Lowe finally talk openly in the kitchen after a sleepless night. Misery says Serena is the only Human she truly cares about and that she needs to learn what happened to Serena whether Serena is alive or dead. Lowe asks about Serena’s work and wants access to her communications, but Misery refuses to hand anything over without understanding his motives. Because Misery risked herself to protect Ana, Lowe decides to trust her and admits that Serena’s apparent interest in Ana is what matters to him.

Lowe then reveals the secret he has been protecting: Ana is his younger sister, but not a full Were. Their mother was a Were, while Ana’s father was Human, making Ana a seemingly impossible mixed child. Misery is stunned, first wondering whether Ana might be Vampyre, then realizing Lowe means Ana is half Human. Lowe explains that his mother served under the former Alpha Roscoe and likely met Ana’s father through unofficial Human-Were negotiations near the border.

When Misery asks why Lowe believes this impossible story, Lowe explains that Ana has always shown traits that do not match an ordinary Were child. Ana does not shift, her blood is red instead of green, yet she is stronger and more agile than a Human, and her vital signs are unusual. After Lowe’s mother was fatally injured, she told Lowe the truth, and Juno later helped him confirm Ana’s biology through DNA testing. Lowe says he hid the truth because Roscoe would have used or destroyed Ana if he had known.

Lowe broadens the explanation into the recent history of the pack. Roscoe became increasingly violent toward Humans, Vampyres, and dissenting Weres, and Lowe’s mother was killed during that internal conflict. Lowe returned, challenged Roscoe, became Alpha, and then made what he now sees as a mistake by sparing Roscoe’s remaining supporters. Those survivors became the Loyal faction, backed by Roscoe’s mate Emery, and they have since used sabotage and attacks to undermine Lowe. Lowe and Misery conclude that Serena may have learned Ana’s secret because Ana is half Human, and that discovery could explain Serena’s disappearance; however, Lowe thinks the Loyals may simply be using Ana as leverage against him rather than fully understanding who she is.

After discussing who knew Ana’s secret and whether any trusted allies could have exposed it, Lowe insists that Juno, Cal, and Mick are loyal, even though Misery remains skeptical. Their tense exchange softens when Lowe catches Misery secretly eating peanut butter, leading to an unexpectedly intimate moment in which he treats her embarrassment with curiosity rather than contempt. The conversation returns to Serena, and they agree to work together: Misery will reexamine Serena’s messages using pack data and technology, while Alex will assist and monitor her. As Misery leaves, Lowe notices her injuries, reacts sharply when she shows him a burn on her side, and the chapter ends with Ana running to him after a nightmare, reminding Misery that Lowe’s protectiveness of Ana drives nearly every decision he is making.
