Chapter 40
Overview
This chapter shows Bryce, Hunt, and Tharion each reacting to the growing moral and political pressure around them. Bryce’s group gets no answers about Emile and is reminded that Mordoc is now a direct threat, while Hunt begins an unexpected thaw with Baxian during his enforced separation from Bryce. Tharion’s meeting with the River Queen leaves him increasingly doubtful that either side in the coming conflict truly deserves to win, sharpening the story’s distrust of those in power.
Summary
Bryce, Ithan, and Tharion are confronted outside the Astronomer’s den by Mordoc, the brutal wolf interrogator and Danika’s father. Bryce is shaken by the resemblance in his movements to Danika, but she keeps control of the exchange with sarcasm while Mordoc needles Ithan about Sabine casting him out and hints that he has noticed Ithan’s suspicious movements. Mordoc also threatens Tharion with a story about torturing a mer away from water, reminding all three of the danger he represents.
Once they are safely away, Bryce steadies herself and speaks separately with Tharion and Ithan. She remains angry with Tharion but decides they still need each other against worse enemies, so she puts him on unofficial “probation” and asks him to share any leads about Emile. With Ithan, Bryce sees that the news about Connor being trapped in the Bone Quarter has not truly comforted him, and she promises they will find a way to help Connor, even though she does not know how.
At the Comitium, Hunt tells Isaiah that Celestina’s punishment keeping him and Bryce apart for two weeks feels unbearable because he and Bryce had not wanted to wait to be together physically. Hunt also explains Sabine’s visit to Bryce’s apartment and Baxian’s unwanted backup. Hunt wants to confide in Isaiah about Ophion and the larger danger, but he deliberately stays silent because knowledge alone could get Isaiah tortured or killed.
Baxian joins Hunt and Isaiah for lunch, and the meeting begins with tension, especially when Isaiah warns Baxian not to harm anyone in Lunathion. Hunt diffuses the conflict by pointing out that Sandriel is still dividing them even after her death. Later, in the triarii barracks, Baxian admits he is trying not to remain Hunt’s enemy, and Hunt reluctantly begins to meet him halfway. The two discover they both live in the same emptiness, and Hunt invites Baxian to play a Sunball video game, marking the first real easing of hostility between them.
That night, Bryce and Hunt talk by phone because Hunt is still confined to the barracks and Pollux and the Hind make a visit impossible. After Bryce reflects that she still has not safely told Hunt about the mystics and Thanatos, their conversation turns explicitly sexual, and they use the call to bridge the forced separation between them. The scene reinforces both their frustration with the punishment and the intensity of their bond.
The next morning, Tharion reports to the River Queen about what he learned regarding the Bone Quarter and the fate of souls. Instead of denying the horrifying system, the River Queen treats it as practical and avoids giving a direct answer about what happens after secondlight, which deepens Tharion’s distrust. He also admits that his latest attempt to find Emile failed, and as the River Queen disappears into the river, Tharion is left questioning whether a rebellion is worth it if it only replaces one group of power-hungry rulers with another.
