Chapter 59
Overview
The Asteri interrupt the ball and publicly recognize Bryce and Hunt as princess and prince, making Bryce's defiance of her father official and impossible to undo quietly. The scene also reveals how deeply even powerful rulers fear the Asteri, raising the stakes around every secret Bryce and her allies are hiding.
As Bryce and Hunt celebrate their bond, Hypaxia's first attempt to reach Lidia ends in cold rejection. Ruhn then slips away for his planned meeting with Day, only to discover the Harpy waiting for him instead, turning a night of triumph into a new threat.
Summary
Bryce is still reeling from successfully claiming Hunt as her mate and prince when the Asteri suddenly appear on a screen above the ball. Their presence terrifies the entire room, and Bryce realizes they may have been watching everything. After congratulating Celestina and Ephraim, Rigelus commands that Bryce and Hunt be presented, turning Bryce's private victory into an official, public reckoning before the most powerful beings in their world.
The Autumn King formally presents Bryce, and Hunt is named her mate, consort, and prince. Cormac is forced to stand beside them despite his anger that Bryce ruined their arrangement without warning. Bryce fears the Asteri may somehow know about her rebel ties and Cormac's true loyalties, but the Asteri simply order everyone to rise and continue celebrating, leaving behind a room full of shaken guests.
Once the screen goes dark, the Autumn King quietly calls Bryce a bitch, and Bryce mocks him with open satisfaction because he can do nothing against her in public. Hunt backs her without hesitation, and the two move onto the dance floor. As they settle into the dance, Hunt tells Bryce that everything in his life led him to her and that he is hers forever; Bryce answers that everything she is belongs to him, and the star on her chest flares brightly.
The focus then shifts to Ruhn, who dances with Hypaxia while overhearing Fae guests insult Hunt's elevation to princely status. Ruhn silently marks everyone speaking against his new brother-in-law. Hypaxia admits she has been searching for her sister, Lidia, and asks Ruhn to accompany her because she has never met the Hind in person and wants to greet her formally.
Hypaxia approaches Lidia and tries to establish a connection by calling her sister, but Lidia responds with polished contempt and refuses any warmth. Pollux sneers as well until Lidia tells him to step away for a moment. Seeing an opening, Ruhn leaves Hypaxia and slips outside to the western garden, where he waits by a fountain for Day at midnight. Instead of his secret contact, the Harpy emerges from the shadows and catches him there.
