At the packed Crescent City Ballet, Bryce Quinlan feels both pride in Juniper Andromeda’s starring performance and discomfort at being watched. Since Bryce’s role in healing Lunathion during the spring attack, strangers stare at her or approach her with gratitude and grief, reminding Bryce that although she saved many, thousands still died. While waiting in the lobby with Ember Quinlan and Randall Silago, Bryce studies Fae art and translates Old Language inscriptions about Hel and the First Wars, which stirs painful memories of the recent battle.

Ember uses the conversation to push Bryce about her life. She questions why Bryce works at the Fae Archives instead of somewhere like the ballet’s art department or with Jesiba, and she clearly distrusts anything connected to the Autumn King. Bryce defends her job, explaining only indirectly that she likes the research work and needs employment after the gallery’s destruction. Ember also presses Bryce about Hunt Athalar, sensing that Bryce and Hunt are emotionally involved but still holding themselves back, and Bryce asks her mother to stop before Hunt arrives.

After Bryce texts Hunt to rescue her from the interrogation, Hunt arrives at the private box looking striking in formalwear and immediately shifts Bryce’s mood. Juniper sends champagne, but Hunt drops a testing pill into Bryce’s drink to make sure it is not poisoned or drugged, showing both caution and protectiveness. Once they sit down, Bryce spots Fury Axtar in the audience, and Ember asks about Fury and Juniper’s relationship, as well as Bryce’s repaired friendship with Fury. Ember then bluntly tells Bryce and Hunt they would make a beautiful couple if they would commit.

As the audience settles, Bryce and Hunt continue the flirtation that has defined their relationship since spring. Bryce recalls their agreement to wait until Winter Solstice before becoming physical, choosing instead to spend months getting to know each other after shared trauma and chaos. That choice has deepened their intimacy but also made the attraction between them harder to bear, especially under the gaze of the Fae nobility, who openly sneer at Bryce’s presence in the box.

Just before the ballet begins, Bryce’s star-shaped chest scar suddenly flares with bright light, exposing her Starborn power to the entire theater and humiliating her. Hunt immediately covers the mark with his hand, physically containing most of the glow and calming Bryce with humor and steady reassurance. Ember and Randall worry, but Bryce chooses to stay, and Hunt makes it clear that no one in the theater will dare harass them. By the time the light fades and the curtain rises, Bryce is grounded again, reminded that Hunt understands her burdens better than anyone and that their bond is only growing stronger.
