Chapter 10
Overview
Hunt loses control and attacks Pollux as soon as Sandriel's brutal triarii arrive in Lunathion, proving that Celestina's new personnel will reopen old traumas and create immediate danger for Bryce and Hunt. While Ithan struggles with the identity-shattering pain of becoming packless, Bryce steps in to defend Hunt, openly challenges Pollux, and helps secure Hunt's release. The chapter deepens Ithan's isolation, establishes Pollux as a direct enemy, and hints that Baxian may not be as simple a threat as expected.
Summary
In Governor Celestina's office, Hunt, Isaiah, and Naomi meet the two members of Sandriel's former triarii who have been sent to Lunathion: Pollux and Baxian. Seeing Pollux immediately brings back Hunt's rage and trauma, and after Pollux taunts them with a mocking greeting, Hunt tackles him. The violent outburst shows how dangerous Pollux's presence will be for Hunt and how quickly old wounds can disrupt his attempt to stay under control.
Elsewhere, Ithan stays alone in Bryce's apartment, tending the injuries Sabine and Amelie gave him. Bored and unsettled, he reflects on the reality of becoming a wolf without a pack, a loss that feels like a spiritual injury rather than just a social change. When he shifts into wolf form, the experience only sharpens his sense of emptiness and exile, and he realizes how deeply the rejection has shaken him.
Ithan receives a message from Perry Ravenscroft asking if he is alive, reminding him that at least one member of his former pack still cares. Thinking about Bryce's own isolation after losing Danika and the Pack of Devils helps him steady himself. He decides not to solve his whole future at once, but to keep moving one step at a time, and settles for a small act of routine by trying to care for Syrinx.
Later, Bryce visits Hunt in a holding cell beneath the Comitium after Celestina informs her what happened. Hunt tries to push Bryce away, but Bryce refuses and instead confronts Pollux directly in his neighboring cell. Pollux insults her and threatens Hunt indirectly, so Bryce uses her starlight to warn him that she will make his life miserable if he ever touches Hunt again, proving she is not intimidated by him.
Baxian then appears and, to Bryce's surprise, seems far less openly hostile than Pollux; before leaving, he remarks that he is glad Micah was killed. Celestina, monitoring the exchange, decides Hunt can go free while keeping Pollux locked up for later discipline. Bryce supports Hunt as he limps out, and Pollux's final insult only confirms that the conflict between him, Hunt, and Bryce is now personal.
