Chapter 67
Overview
Tharion escapes the River Queen by swearing himself to the Viper Queen, trading one captivity for another so he can still aid Bryce’s mission. Ithan separates from the group after learning the wolf mystic may be an Alpha Fendyr heir, choosing to stay behind and protect her from Sabine. Ruhn and Day finally act on their bond, but when Ruhn reveals the plan to break into the Asteri Archives, Day panics, warns the mission is deadly, and disappears after mentioning the dungeons, hinting that her identity and captivity are tied to the Asteri.
Summary
Tharion rushes to the Viper Queen’s nest because he has run out of time to avoid being dragged back under the River Queen’s control. Ignoring Ariadne’s presence, he goes straight to the Viper Queen and offers to become one of her prize fighters, then escalates to selling himself to her outright. Because he sees this as the only alternative to a different kind of royal enslavement and forced breeding, Tharion accepts her blood-oath despite its danger. When he drinks her venomous blood, the force pursuing him abruptly stops, proving the bond has severed the River Queen’s claim.
The Viper Queen confirms the oath worked and immediately asserts her ownership by assigning Tharion his first fight that night. Tharion bargains for one concession: he wants to help his friends finish their mission first. She agrees, but only after compelling him to promise that he will return to her afterward. As Tharion leaves, he feels his mind gradually become his own again, yet he also senses an invisible leash tying him permanently to the Viper Queen and the life he has traded for another form of captivity.
Elsewhere, Ithan sits with Hypaxia after learning from the Prime that the wolf mystic is a Fendyr and an Alpha heir. Realizing Sabine would likely kill any rival claimant, Ithan decides the mystic is in immediate danger and concludes he cannot go to Pangera with Bryce and the others. Instead, he chooses to remain in Lunathion, investigate the truth of the mystic’s identity, and guard her himself. He asks Hypaxia not to tell Bryce about the possible heir, sends Bryce a grateful farewell message, then shifts without pain for the first time in weeks and runs toward the Astronomer’s place to begin watching over the mystic.
Ruhn then reunites mentally with Day for the first time since the ball. Day tries to end their connection, insisting their kiss was reckless and that a powerful male tied to her would kill Ruhn if he discovered them. Ruhn drops the concealment he usually keeps around his mind, presses her to trust what exists between them, and promises he will find her one day. Day responds by finishing the fairy-tale story she once began, turning it into a confession about being seen and loved despite what she has become, and the two give in to their desire and have sex through their mind-bridge.
Afterward, the emotional intimacy shifts back to plot when Ruhn tells Day that he and his allies are planning to break into the Asteri Archives in the crystal palace because Sofie Renast’s missing intel is likely hidden there. Instead of helping, Day reacts with alarm, insists the mission must be a trap, and warns that she will not be able to save Ruhn or Bryce if they are caught. As some outside presence seems to interrupt and frighten her again, she blurts out a final clue about “the dungeons” before vanishing entirely. Her terror and sudden disappearance suggest the danger around her is immediate and tied directly to the Asteri’s stronghold.
