Prologue
Overview
In the prologue, Sofie Renast infiltrates the Kavalla death camp to rescue her brother Emile and secretly carries intelligence that could damage the Asteri. She succeeds in getting Emile and eleven other children out, but gives herself up to draw off the pursuit, allowing their ship to escape.
The chapter also reveals that Sofie and Emile possess the nearly extinct thunderbird gift, with Emile proving even more powerful by destroying pursuing Omega warships. Sofie is captured by the Hind and executed at sea after refusing to reveal her intel, leaving Ophion with a priceless new asset in Emile but apparently losing Sofie and her unrevealed information.
Summary
Sofie Renast has survived two weeks inside the Kavalla death camp by hiding her unusual scent beneath the camp’s filth and by passing as fully human. The chapter explains that Sofie is a rare human who made the Drop and carries Vanir traits, though she does not consider herself Vanir. After her rebel parents were betrayed and killed, and her brother Emile disappeared into the camps, Sofie spent three years serving Ophion as a spy and killer in exchange for information about him. Before entering Kavalla, she also obtained critical intelligence that might damage the Asteri, but she kept it in her own mind so Ophion would be forced to honor its promises to extract her and Emile.
Once inside Kavalla, Sofie eventually finds Emile and sneaks into his bunk to free him. Emile persuades her to take eleven other imprisoned children as well, while a human sun-priest helps by acting as lookout. Sofie uses her power over energy to cut through the electrified fence, disable lights, and lead the children out under pursuit from armed dreadwolves. They run through the forest to a waiting van driven by Agent Silverbow, who has defied orders to remain nearby until her signal.
Silver drives Sofie, Emile, and the children toward the port of Servast, feeding them from the limited supplies he brought and warning Sofie that the Hind is close. At the docks, the escape ship Bodegraven is waiting, but Silver senses dreadwolves surrounding the area. Realizing the group will be trapped if they all stay together, Sofie orders Silver to get the children and Emile to the ship while she draws the pursuers away. She sends Emile off with a promise that she will find him again, then turns to face the attackers alone.
Sofie fights through Servast by using her thunderbird power, first electrocuting the Hind’s elite dreadwolves in a flooded market square and then racing back toward the departing ship. The Hind and her snipers intercept her at the dock, and a gorsian bullet shatters Sofie’s thigh before she can jump aboard. A brief shift follows to Pippa Spetsos aboard the rebel ship Orrae, where she learns Sofie is missing but Emile and the children survived. As imperial Omega submersibles close on the Bodegraven, Emile unleashes enormous light-and-energy power from the ship and destroys all four pursuers, proving his abilities are even greater than Sofie’s.
Back on the dock, Sofie lies powerless and wounded after overextending herself, especially by drawing on firstlight. The Hind captures her, confirms that both Sofie and Emile possess the near-extinct thunderbird gift, and demands to know who received Sofie’s intelligence. Sofie insists she told no one. Deciding the intel can die with her, the Hind has Sofie shackled, taken out to sea, and thrown overboard with weighted chains. Sofie dies knowing Emile escaped, while the Hind watches her sink beneath the water.
