Chapter 17
Overview
In the aftermath of Cormac’s revelations, Bryce, Hunt, Ruhn, Tharion, and Ithan decide not to rush blindly into the Bone Quarter and instead quietly investigate links among Sofie, Danika, Lightfall, Project Thurr, and the Asteri. Hunt’s terror at being pulled toward another rebellion reveals how much the looming conflict threatens the fragile life he and Bryce have built.
Bryce chooses to pursue Sofie’s missing intel and protect Emile anyway, not just to help Cormac or Ophion, but to gain leverage against the Asteri themselves. The chapter also marks a turning point in Bryce and Hunt’s relationship, as they finally admit they do not want to keep waiting to be together.
Summary
After Cormac’s revelation, the apartment falls into tense silence. Bryce insists on going back to work so she can think, while the others discuss what to do next. Tharion says he wants answers for himself, not just because of the River Queen’s orders, and both he and Hunt admit they think Cormac was probably telling the truth. Bryce begins connecting names from Danika and Sofie’s messages, wondering if Dusk’s Truth relates to Pippa’s Lightfall squadron and if Project Thurr connects to the thunderbirds.
Ithan, still overwhelmed by everything he has missed, reacts to the surreal turn of events, but the group returns to the practical question of whether to search the Bone Quarter. Bryce refuses to go there without stronger evidence, and Tharion agrees it is too dangerous to act on guesswork. They decide to keep investigating quietly, tell no one, and reconvene the following night, because any leak could get all of them killed. Hunt urges Bryce to arm herself, but she refuses, though the exchange reveals she still has Danika’s sword.
Once Bryce and Hunt leave the apartment, Hunt’s fear fully surfaces. The prospect of another rebellion triggers memories of the war he survived, and he describes the brutal death and torture he has seen, making clear that he understands the cost of tangling with the Asteri and their agents. Bryce steadies him and argues that this may be espionage rather than open war, but Hunt warns that Emile is now valuable to multiple factions because he might know Sofie’s location or the secret she discovered. Bryce decides that if there is a chance to recover Sofie’s intel and whatever Danika learned, they should pursue it.
Bryce explains that she wants leverage against the Asteri, especially because they already have dangerous knowledge about her and Hunt. She believes Danika considered this information important enough to die for, and she also insists that Emile matters as a child caught in a larger struggle, not just as a weapon. Hunt admits that he wants a world free of the Asteri but fears losing Bryce before they could ever reach it. In the emotional aftermath, Bryce tells Hunt she no longer wants to wait until the Winter Solstice to act on their attraction, and they kiss passionately in an alley before Hunt stops them, remembering Bryce must keep up her public engagement to Cormac. Even so, they openly confirm that they both want each other and agree to continue things in private later.
