Chapter 22
Contains spoilersOverview
Alice and Hayden share an intimate, sleepless night on Angela’s garden bench that deepens their connection. The next day, subtle tensions with Angela and Hayden’s concern about Alice’s suppressed feelings escalate into a car argument, ending with Hayden pointedly saying goodbye. Back in Little Crescent, Alice begins the next interview with Margaret, who probes Alice about Hayden; Alice vouches for his trustworthiness despite their fight, and Margaret returns to the Ives story.
Summary
Late at night in Angela’s garden, Alice finds Hayden awake. Hayden opens up about lifelong insomnia stemming from pressure to perform as a child and the relief he found in solitude. They sit close, with gentle physical affection, and fall asleep together on the outdoor bench.
At dawn they wake peacefully and help Angela collect eggs. Alice texts her friends about “sleeping” with Hayden, clarifying it was strictly sleeping, and banters with Cillian, Bianca, and Priya. Later, Alice finds Hayden sweaty from a run and helping Angela in the garden.
While gardening, Angela reveals she read Hayden’s book and a past story of Alice’s about a child star, praising Alice’s improvement but also implying she could be doing something else. The mix of pride and subtle criticism unsettles Alice; she withdraws before a fight.
After lunch, Angela sends them off warmly with leftovers. In the car, Hayden gently urges Alice to talk about her feelings toward Angela. The conversation quickly escalates as Hayden asserts Alice is hurt and angry, and Alice rejects his framing, accusing him of steamrolling and projecting his upbringing. He responds that she is lying to herself; she retorts she was pretending he was someone else. They drive in silence to the Grande Lucia, where Hayden exits with a cool “Goodbye, Alice.”
At the next morning’s interview, Margaret notes Alice seems less chipper. When Alice demurs, Margaret mentions Hayden also hates talking about himself and asks whether he can be trusted. Despite the rift, Alice defends Hayden as guarded but honest and trustworthy. Margaret accepts this and turns back to resume her life story from where they left off.
