Chapter 74
Overview
Raeve defeats Kaan in Skripi with a clever smox play, freeing herself from the promise tied to their wager. The victory matters because it proves Raeve can still outmaneuver him, but it also exposes a painful emotional gap between them when Kaan treats the bargain as mere sex while Raeve wants something deeper. Even with that misunderstanding laid bare, Raeve chooses to keep the night going and asks Kaan to dance.
Summary
Raeve and Kaan continue their high-stakes game of Skripi with teasing banter, but tension runs beneath it. Kaan mentions teaching his sister the game, steals Raeve's powerful Moltenmaw shard with a woetoe play, and pointedly asks about the Mindweft, reminding Raeve of unresolved strain between them. He then calls Skripi early, forcing the match into its final sequence before Raeve is fully ready.
As the last lay unfolds, Kaan steadily controls the board and appears to corner Raeve. He softly admits, "If I’m losing you again, I need to know why," showing that the game has become tangled with his fear of losing her. Kaan then reveals a Sabersythe in the final spot, a move that seems unbeatable because the only obvious counter has already been spent.
Raeve overturns the game by playing the risky smox shard she saved. When Kaan asks what creature it becomes, Raeve answers, "A tick," turning the smox into a tiny parasite whose inherited weakness kills the feral Sabersythe. The play destroys Kaan’s winning position, wins Raeve the game, and releases the magical promise written across her palm, ending the wager’s hold on her.
Afterward, Raeve asks about storing her festival gold and repaying Pyrok, and Kaan says his guards will handle both, but his manner turns cold and detached. Kaan bitterly asks whether Raeve wants to have sex immediately and be done with it, making clear that he has reduced the wager to a physical transaction. Raeve realizes he does not understand that she wanted something more tender: a brief chance to love him, give him a goodbye, and perhaps later sever their connection again if necessary. Even so, Raeve refuses to end the night there; she walks to Kaan’s side, offers her hand, and asks him to dance. After a pause, Kaan stands and follows her.
