Chapter 3
Overview
Raeve leads Tarik Relaken into isolation, overpowers him with Clode’s aid, and executes him for running a brutal child-fighting operation and abusing his family. Before killing him, she makes clear that the Fíur du Ath has already moved to protect his bound and children and to free the captives. The chapter reveals the depth of Raeve’s rage, the extent of Tarik’s depravity, and the larger justice-driven mission behind her violence.
Summary
Raeve walks through the snowy Ditch with Tarik Relaken following close behind, deliberately leading him up the inner wall to a deserted, exposed stretch near a deadly drop. Although Tarik matches her steps in stealth, Raeve remains focused on survival and vengeance, preparing the trap she has set for him.
At the edge, Raeve removes her iron ring and opens herself to the overwhelming divine songs, then filters out Clode, the Goddess of Air. When Tarik grabs her and tries to force her against the wall, Raeve uses the moment to strike back. She calls on Clode to strip most of the air from Tarik’s lungs and fires a nullifying iron pin from her boot into his ankle so he cannot use Ignos, the God of Fire, against her.
With Tarik immobilized and gasping, Raeve draws a dragonscale blade and begins punishing him rather than killing him immediately. She severs one of his hands and explains that she found his hidden Undercity operation, where children are kept in cells and forced into combat. Raeve reveals that she tried to free the captives but needed Tarik’s handprint to open the cells, which is why she takes his hand.
Raeve continues by exposing how Tarik’s bound contacted the Fíur du Ath and told them the truth about his crimes. She accuses him of buying his bound for breeding, abusing her and others, and burning his null son with Ignos for failing his expectations. As she carves accusations into Tarik’s chest, the scene makes clear that Raeve’s violence is driven by fury at systematic cruelty, exploitation, and the suffering of children.
Finally, Raeve tells Tarik that his daughter has begun hearing Ignos, and that his family has already been escorted out of the city while his criminal enterprise is being dismantled and the children rescued. After forcing Tarik to experience helplessness at the hands of someone he considers beneath him, Raeve rejects his plea for mercy and cuts his throat, finishing the execution.
