Chapter 77
Overview
Raeve wakes beside Kaan after their night together and is torn between the comfort of being with him and her terror of losing him. When she tries to leave, Kaan stops her and insists she must hear a painful truth about her past and the people affected by her return. Rather than face that revelation, Raeve tries to delay it by pulling them back into intimacy, showing how strongly she still resists confronting what her restored identity means.
Summary
Raeve wakes during a storm in Kaan’s bed and slowly realizes the night was real, not a dream or recovered memory. As she takes in the room and Kaan sleeping beside her, she recalls their drunken joy after the pillar-top kiss, the walk back through the rain, and the comfort of falling asleep while Kaan soothed her. She also remembers that, before she slept, Kaan said there was a painful truth she needed to hear.
Watching Kaan in the lightning, Raeve is overwhelmed by love, longing, and grief. His scarred body makes her think about everything he has survived since they were separated, and that thought turns into a sharper fear: if she stays, she could lose him the way she has lost others. Because Raeve cannot bear another death tied to her heart, she decides she has to leave immediately, even though she wants to remain with him.
When Raeve tries to get up, Kaan pulls her back into his arms. He gently stalls her by talking about the aurora, but then directly reminds her that they still need to have a serious conversation. Raeve resists and says she does not want the talk at all, but Kaan makes clear that he will not let her walk away from her past so easily. He says that if she leaves without hearing him, he will follow her for the rest of eternity unless she kills him first.
Kaan then raises the stakes further by telling Raeve that other people would be affected by her return, especially one person in particular, and that she needs to know the truth. Raeve recognizes from his expression that this matters deeply, and she realizes she is unlikely to escape the conversation. Still unwilling to face whatever revelation is coming, Raeve tries to slip back into fantasy instead of pain.
To avoid the serious talk, Raeve turns flirtatious and asks what they used to do in the room before the aurora rose, pretending she wants memory and desire instead of truth. Kaan sees through her but responds to the invitation, touching and kissing her while pressing her to admit what she has dreamed about. The chapter ends with Kaan asking Raeve how he used to make love to her in those dreams, leaving the truth deferred beneath renewed intimacy.
