Overview
A childhood memory reveals how the narrator claimed a mature Moonplume while trying to save Haedeon during a doomquill attack. Although the feat was extraordinary, it could not prevent Haedeon from being permanently crippled or his hatchling from being badly injured. The chapter turns that rescue into a source of guilt rather than triumph and ends by hinting at a new, unsettling connection to the once-silent Creators.
Summary
The chapter recounts a painful memory from the narrator's youth. In the present frame of the memory, Pahpi calls the narrator remarkable for claiming a mature Moonplume at such a young age, but the narrator cannot take pride in it because the rescue ended in lasting damage.
The narrator explains that Haedeon's egg began to hatch while they were hiding in a makeshift camp. At that same moment, a pack of doomquills discovered them, forcing the narrator to act quickly. To protect the egg, the narrator hid it against Haedeon for warmth before it had fully hatched, then fought the doomquills alone.
The narrator could not win that fight unaided. A massive Moonplume that had been circling intervened and burned the remaining doomquills, saving them. Afterward, the narrator climbed onto the Moonplume's back, held on, and used a soft song until the creature listened, allowing the narrator to claim it and get Haedeon home.
The victory comes at a terrible cost. Haedeon's bones healed incorrectly, leaving him unable to walk, and no healer can safely rebreak and repair the damage. His Moonplume also suffered a damaged wing and may never fly.
Because of those consequences, the narrator rejects Pahpi's praise. The chapter ends by revealing another change: when the narrator begged the Creators for help during the crisis, they stayed silent, but now their voices will not stop speaking.
