Summary
Xavier narrates a night out where he and Samantha thrive with his friend group, winning at miniature golf, laser tag, and enjoying arcade games and bumper cars. Samantha integrates effortlessly with his friends, easing Xavier’s usual social discomfort and surprising him with how much he enjoys being with her.
Not wanting the night to end, Samantha suggests an escape room. At the prize counter, they reminisce about childhood arcade prizes and pool their tickets for small trinkets. An employee, apathetic and near closing time, lets them choose the alien spaceship room, has them lock away their phones, and gives a perfunctory briefing before shutting them in.
Inside, Xavier and Samantha collaborate well, solving puzzles from hieroglyphic ciphers to safe codes, and escape the puzzles with four minutes to spare as a disco ball spins and “Come On Eileen” blares. As they celebrate and move toward a kiss, they realize the door is locked and no one returns to let them out. They initially assume staff will notice on cameras or during closing checks, but time passes, the music loops, and no one comes.
With Samantha’s early flight looming and their phones locked outside, anxiety rises. They pound on the door and wave at the camera to no avail. Eventually, they sit on the floor sharing Ring Pops, oscillating between humor and frustration. Xavier climbs up to disconnect the ceiling speaker to stop the looping song and, angry about being watched, unplugs the camera as well.
Settling together for warmth, their conversation turns personal. They banter about work—Samantha’s marketing job for mustard and Xavier’s preference for animals over people—then discuss childhood pets. Xavier deflects questions about his formative veterinary moment, revealing only that his childhood dog was named Winnie. Samantha shares light anecdotes about rescued and short-lived small pets.
The tone deepens as they exchange honest admissions: Xavier says he likes her for her authenticity and how she treats animals; Samantha says she likes his apology and integrity, and finds him handsome. Xavier confesses embarrassment about his initial rudeness at the clinic, and Samantha reveals the pain of her mother’s dementia and her guilt over being away. In response, Xavier discloses, for the first time to someone outside his inner circle, that his parents were physically, verbally, mentally, and emotionally abusive, that he left at seventeen to live with Jesse’s family, and that this history taught him to hide emotions to avoid being hurt.
Cocooned against the cold floor, they acknowledge that both had wished the night wouldn’t end, amplifying their bond. Just as the intimacy settles in, a lock turns and the door flings open, ending their accidental confinement.
