20: Samantha
Contains spoilersOverview
Samantha cared for Lisa while reflecting on the six weeks since ending things with Xavier. A sudden, violent meltdown from Lisa triggered an ER visit and left the family shaken. Seeing how fragile their routines were, the family decided to proactively medicate agitation and, in a cathartic turn, began demolishing the outdated kitchen to move forward with long-delayed updates.
Summary
Samantha applied Lisa’s makeup, noting Tristan had dyed and cut Lisa’s hair but was still angry with Samantha despite repeated apologies. Samantha privately reviewed her brief relationship with Xavier, admitting she had asked for no contact and had not heard from him since. Dan (Dad) left for the gym, a new routine, and Samantha observed how painful Lisa’s decline was for him.
Samantha brought Lisa to breakfast, where Dan’s absence unsettled Lisa. Grandma tried to maintain normalcy, but Lisa fixated on Dan’s whereabouts. As the siblings filtered in, Samantha mischievously signed up a man who “drowned puppies,” mentioned by Xavier, for spam lender quotes; Jeneva and Tristan piled on with plans for political texts and an IRS audit. Tension with Tristan persisted.
Lisa began crying and accusing Samantha and Grandma of driving Dan away. The situation escalated rapidly: Lisa hurled dishes, swept items off counters, and screamed for Dan. Samantha, Jeneva, and Tristan restrained Lisa while Grandma tried to administer Ativan hidden in orange juice. The boys watched, terrified. After ten minutes of failed de-escalation and mounting exhaustion, Samantha told Grandma to call 911.
At the hospital, Dan met them; Lisa was admitted overnight for observation. The family, physically and emotionally shaken, learned that such outbursts and violent tantrums were expected in the disease’s progression and that they should dose sedatives proactively at early signs of agitation. Samantha nursed a fat lip and recalled prior injuries, feeling the cumulative toll of caregiving.
Back home, the kitchen was wrecked. The family cleaned in silence while Dan, devastated by the implications of leaving for self-care, stared at the mess. Abruptly, Dan began tearing up the old linoleum, declaring there was no point in cleaning it. The siblings quickly joined in, agreeing to replace countertops, the stove, and anything avocado green.
In a unifying decision, they demolished the rest of the kitchen together, effectively committing to long-postponed renovations despite earlier concerns about disrupting Lisa’s environment, which had already been upended by the crisis.
