Epilogue: Samantha
Contains spoilersOverview
On Mother’s Day, Samantha, her father, Tristan, and Jeneva take Lisa on a nostalgic convertible ride to rekindle happy memories despite her advanced dementia. Xavier brings Jeneva’s sons to his clinic and checks in as Samantha leads the outing. The family reflects on hardships and support systems, including Hank’s pivotal role in keeping Xavier’s Minnesota clinic open and enabling a second location in California. During the drive home, Samantha discovers all of Lisa’s long-missing jewelry hidden in the car’s ashtray, and Lisa peacefully enjoys the moment.
Summary
Nearly two years into Samantha and Xavier’s relationship and eleven months after prior events, the family spends Mother’s Day taking Lisa for a ride in her beloved Dodge Dart. Samantha organizes the outing with Dad and Tristan seated beside Lisa for safety, while Jeneva rides up front. They plan a sensory trip down memory lane: top down, one of Lisa’s old tapes playing, a scarf on her hair, and coconut sunblock, accepting the risks given Lisa’s progressed dementia.
Xavier steps out to say goodbye, reporting that Jeneva’s boys want to accompany him to the clinic. He confirms dinner plans with Dad and kisses Samantha before they depart. Samantha starts with a cautious loop around the block, then expands the route as Lisa remains calm and observant.
The family visits Lisa’s old high school and then Brand Park, where they set a blanket under a tree for Lisa’s first such outing in almost two years. Samantha reflects that while caregiving has been difficult—including Lisa’s delirium from a severe UTI and a recent fall that injured Dad’s back—the four of them, now five including Xavier, have managed together, keeping Lisa at home for now.
Xavier texts a photo of the boys holding kittens at the clinic, prompting Samantha and Jeneva to joke about a family veterinary “business.” Samantha recounts how, after Xavier left Minnesota, Hank recruited retired veterinarians to rotate shifts, expanding the clinic to six days a week and keeping it solvent. This stability allowed Xavier to secure financing to open a second clinic in California. The plan is to keep the Minnesota location running until loans are reduced enough to sell or until a permanent doctor can be hired. Hank, considered family and now an honorary grandfather, even stood in as father of the groom at the wedding, and the family visits him regularly.
After an hour, they leave the park and stop at Grandma’s favorite panaderia for Mexican sweet bread. Samantha notes that Lisa asks about her mother less often now as memories blur, and the family gently preserves Lisa’s peace by not reintroducing painful losses. Lisa remains surrounded by loved ones who witness and support her daily routines, including meeting Xavier anew each day.
Driving home at sunset with Alanis Morissette on the tape, Samantha notices the car’s ashtray compartment. Opening it, she discovers all of Lisa’s long-missing jewelry—rings, bracelets, lockets, and earrings—hidden inside. Jeneva pulls the pieces out as everyone reacts with surprise and laughter. Samantha looks back to see Lisa serene and smiling into the wind, held between Tristan and Dad, ending the day on a tender, hopeful note.
