Chapter 107
Overview
Nagel attempts to enlist Dana’s help to find Sasha Vesna and stop the CIA-linked program, but CIA Director Judd moves first and orders Marines to detain Nagel and search the embassy for digital media. Kerble covertly defies the spirit of the order by hiding Nagel’s diplomatic pouch inside Dana’s belongings and sending her away with instructions to tell no one. As Kerble discovers Nagel’s SUV is inexplicably parked above Folimanka Park, the Golěm begins shutting off helium to the sealed SMES, starting an approximately twenty-minute countdown to a catastrophic quench explosion.
Summary
Ambassador Heide Nagel returns to the embassy looking for publicity liaison Dana Daněk, who was supposed to come upstairs under Sergeant Scott Kerble’s escort. Nagel finds Dana in her office on the floor, tearfully packing her belongings after resigning, furious that Nagel forced Michael Harris into a relationship with Sasha Vesna and blaming that scheme for Michael’s death. Nagel insists Sasha did not kill Michael and argues Sasha is also in danger—likely from the same killer—and that Sasha is a victim of a CIA program Nagel helped enable.
Trying to earn Dana’s trust, Nagel admits she has “nothing left to lose,” claiming she just threatened her old boss, CIA Director Gregory Judd, and that she now possesses a crucial video: a deathbed confession tied to the program. Before she can explain further, Kerble appears at the door and announces he has been ordered to detain Nagel. Two additional Marines arrive, override Kerble’s earlier courtesy, and restrain Nagel with flex cuffs while Kerble states the embassy will be searched and Nagel must have no further contact with anyone.
As Dana is ordered to leave the building immediately with her box of personal items, Kerble quietly looks into the box and, in a single smooth motion, slips Nagel’s diplomatic pouch into it beneath Dana’s belongings, adding a sticky note instructing Dana to tell no one and promising someone will contact her. Dana, frightened, hurries out carrying the box, while Nagel is escorted away toward the basement.
Kerble privately reflects that Judd’s orders are “wildly irregular,” suggesting Judd fears Nagel holds information damaging to the CIA rather than suspecting her of espionage. Believing he has protected whatever media Judd seeks, Kerble goes to secure Nagel’s SUV by using the embassy’s emergency keys and the vehicle’s concealed tracker. When the SUV’s location appears, Kerble is stunned to see it is not nearby but three miles away on the ridgeline above Folimanka Park.
Deep underground in the sealed SMES vault, the Golěm crosses to the Cryofab liquid-helium tanks feeding the superconducting system. Ignoring the electronic control panel, the Golěm chooses a blunt method: manually closing the cutoff valves on the tanks to stop helium flow. The Golěm calculates this will start a heating-and-resistance feedback loop leading to a quench within roughly twenty minutes; with the quench vent sealed, expanding helium gas will pressurize the airtight chamber until rupture disks fail, releasing liquid helium and triggering a catastrophic, warhead-like expansion event.
