Chapter 70
Overview
Katherine and Langdon are rushed from the Klementinum into a highly visible embassy limousine as ÚZSI vehicles close in, and Langdon’s reluctance signals he no longer fully trusts the embassy’s control of their “protection.” Dana reports to Ambassador Nagel that Sasha Vesna and Michael Harris may be in danger and is ordered to investigate Sasha’s apartment with Marine backup. In transit, Langdon realizes an embassy flower delivery likely bugged their hotel room, suggesting Katherine’s nightmare was overheard and then weaponized, and he urgently demands Katherine explain her manuscript’s discoveries before they reach the ambassador’s residence.
Summary
Escorted out of the Klementinum after the Blue Alert, Katherine Solomon and Robert Langdon are hurried through courtyards into Marian Square by U.S. Marines and the embassy’s PR liaison, Dana Daněk. Marines document and collect the charred remains of Katherine’s burned manuscript, reinforcing Langdon’s belief that the book has made them a target. Langdon asks to use a phone to check on Jonas Faukman, but Dana refuses, citing the ambassador’s orders to allow no outside contact until they are “safe.”
A conspicuous U.S. embassy stretch limousine waits for them, and Langdon hesitates before getting in as Czech authorities (ÚZSI vehicles) approach with sirens. Pressed by the Marine escort, Langdon finally chooses the limo as the “lesser of two evils,” and the car speeds away just as the ÚZSI convoy arrives.
Left behind, Dana calls Ambassador Nagel to report that Langdon and Katherine have been found. Dana adds urgent new concerns Langdon raised: Sasha Vesna and Michael Harris may be in danger. Having learned the true nature of Michael’s coerced “relationship” with Sasha, Dana is angry that Michael was put in that position; she also explains that Langdon expected to meet Michael at Sasha’s apartment, something went wrong, and Langdon gave Dana Sasha’s apartment key. Nagel orders Dana to go to Sasha’s with Marine guard Scott Kerble.
In the limo, Langdon tells Katherine what happened earlier, including a woman on a bridge reenacting Katherine’s nightmare. He then explains why the embassy seal on the limousine unsettled him: it triggered a delayed memory of the embassy’s flower delivery to their hotel, where he noticed a thin metal rod with a clear cone among the tulips. Remembering similar devices as parabolic microphones, Langdon concludes the bouquet may have been a listening device and that someone likely overheard Katherine describe her nightmare.
Katherine cannot understand why the U.S. embassy would eavesdrop or recreate her dream, but she reveals she overheard Dana instruct the driver to take them to the ambassador’s residence, not the embassy. Langdon warns that protections apply inside the embassy and that meeting at the residence leaves them exposed. With only minutes alone, Langdon presses Katherine to explain what her manuscript contained and what she discovered, and Katherine agrees to tell him.
