Chapter 129
Overview
Kerble, carrying the embassy’s diplomatic pouch, is thrown off course when Ambassador Nagel calls in a panic and gives him an immediate new order, prompting him to invoke their security-coded communication protocol. At the embassy, Nagel is confronted by Sasha Vesna’s sudden arrival, and Sasha claims fear, confusion, and missing memories while asking for safety. Nagel improvises an asylum procedure to have Sasha restrained and secured, buying time but forcing Nagel into rapid, consequential choices.
Summary
Sergeant Scott Kerble drives away from Dana Daněk’s apartment with the embassy diplomatic pouch on the seat beside him, trying to stay alert by blasting the radio as he heads to deliver it to Ambassador Heide Nagel.
Midway around Vítězné Square, Kerble gets a call from a U.S. embassy extension. Nagel is frantic and unusually abrupt as she demands to know Kerble’s location and orders him to do something else immediately. Alarmed, Kerble uses their prearranged security protocol by pretending he cannot hear her clearly and asking coded “errands” questions, but Nagel snaps at him to simply comply.
At the embassy, Nagel hurries down to the foyer, where she has arranged for three Marines to be present for a new arrival. The visitor is Sasha Vesna, disheveled, wet, and exhausted, and Nagel is shaken to see her alive, knowing both Sasha’s suspected dissociative identity disorder and Sasha’s connection to Michael Harris’s death and the Folimanka incident.
Nagel keeps her distance and questions Sasha, who insists Michael Harris told her to come if she was ever in trouble. Sasha claims she is confused, cannot remember what happened, and begs for a safe place, tearful and frightened.
To control the situation, Nagel loudly stops Sasha from approaching and improvises an “asylum” assessment, inventing strict interview rules requiring “controlled restraint.” Sasha immediately cooperates by offering her wrists, and the Marines flex-cuff her and escort her to a locked conference room with basic care. As Nagel heads back upstairs, she recognizes she now faces urgent, high-stakes decisions.
