Chapter 127
Overview
Kerble gets Langdon and Katherine to the Four Seasons, where the immediate danger finally ebbs and Langdon’s thoughts shift from survival to mortality and Katherine’s radical view that consciousness defines life and death. Langdon reassures his worried editor, Jonas Faukman, but still has no progress to report on Katherine’s manuscript. In the suite, Katherine fully admits to herself that she loves Langdon and tries to initiate a romantic moment, only to find him asleep.
Summary
Riding in an embassy sedan through Prague, Robert Langdon notices the Victims of Communism memorial flashing past and reflects on its message of endurance. Katherine Solomon sleeps on his shoulder as Sergeant Kerble drives them south toward the Four Seasons Hotel after dropping Ambassador Nagel at the embassy.
Langdon’s thoughts turn to death and how the day’s dangers have made mortality feel close. He recalls a recent conversation at Vy1ehrad in which Katherine challenged his definition of death, arguing that medicine wrongly defines it by bodily function rather than consciousness, and insisting evidence suggests consciousness can exist beyond the brain.
After they arrive at the Four Seasons, Langdon returns calls from his editor, Jonas Faukman, who has been frantic about the Prague explosion and jokes about Langdon’s habit of being near danger. Langdon reassures him they are safe but cannot offer any encouraging update about Katherine’s manuscript.
In the hotel’s Royal Suite later that evening, Langdon and Katherine prepare for bed. They flirt warmly, and Langdon expresses affection before heading to the bedroom.
Left alone, Katherine privately acknowledges she is in love with Langdon and decides to savor their time together. She changes into carefully chosen lingerie and approaches the darkened bedroom to surprise him, only to find Langdon already asleep, gently snoring.
