Chapter 118

Overview

The Golěm survives the blast and pushes through a dark tram tunnel, determined to escape and free Sasha. Langdon and Katherine crawl out of the shattered garage only to be met by armed guards at the construction entrance.

A U.S. Marine, Scott Kerble, intervenes and claims he works for Ambassador Nagel, but the encounter is immediately compromised when a guard photographs them and reports it. Kerble reveals a major escalation: Nagel has been detained on the CIA director’s orders, and Langdon and Katherine may be targeted next.

Summary

In the powerless tram tunnel leading back toward Crucifix Bastion, the Golěm regains consciousness after being thrown into the rail channel by the blast. Realizing the route behind him is likely blocked, he forces himself forward through the pitch-black tunnel, driven by a single goal: escaping so he can free Sasha.

Elsewhere, shaken and bruised, Robert Langdon and Katherine Solomon pick their way through the dust-choked, damaged garage toward a sliver of daylight. They find the garage’s sliding door knocked off its track, leaving a narrow gap to the driveway outside.

Langdon squeezes through first, fighting a surge of claustrophobia, and emerges into open air—only to find two black-clad soldiers aiming assault rifles at his chest. Katherine follows and is immediately targeted as well, as the guards demand identification.

An imposing U.S. Marine in dress blues intervenes from the top of the driveway, ordering the soldiers to stand down and claiming Langdon and Katherine are with him. The guards reluctantly retreat, but one returns long enough to take a photo of Langdon, Katherine, and the Marine together before calling it in.

The Marine introduces himself as Scott Kerble and says he works for Ambassador Nagel. When Langdon and Katherine insist on speaking to Nagel before going anywhere, Kerble turns urgent and blunt: Nagel has been detained on orders from the CIA director, and Kerble believes Langdon and Katherine are likely next.
