Chapter 2
Contains spoilersOverview
Reeling from her lie at work, Scottie Price seeks refuge at Stockings bar and unloads the story to her best friends, Mika and Denise. After rejecting multiple absurd fixes for her fake husband problem, Mika arranges for his younger brother, Wilder, to pose as Scottie’s spouse for the therapy session with CEO Ellison’s husband, famed counselor Sanders Martin.
Summary
Scottie goes to Stockings, a favorite gay bar, and asks bartender Mika, her best friend, for a strong drink after declaring she had the worst day of her life. Denise, their other best friend and a makeup artist, arrives excited about booking the high-profile Brie Coopertart wedding, but quickly realizes Scottie is distressed.
Scottie recounts to Mika and Denise how she lied at work about having a husband and is now expected to attend marriage counseling with Ellison’s husband, Sanders Martin. Denise criticizes the choice to fabricate a spouse and worries about Scottie being exposed when she cannot produce a husband. Scottie fears being judged by the renowned therapist if the deception unravels.
They brainstorm bad solutions: bringing a blow-up doll as the husband or having Denise disguise herself with a mustache. Mika vetoes the doll idea and initially volunteers, but he has a conflicting therapy appointment at the same time and cannot cancel without a fee.
Seeking alternatives, Mika proposes his younger brother, Wilder, who is retired after selling an app and has time. Despite Scottie’s hesitation and embarrassment, Mika texts Wilder, who quickly agrees to help and asks for details.
Denise argues that going into the session with minimal backstory could work in Scottie’s favor, making the relationship look chaotic enough for Sanders to end the session quickly. They decide Scottie should meet Wilder fifteen minutes before the appointment to align a basic story and limit damage, emphasizing that blame can be shifted to Wilder later to preserve Scottie’s image with Ellison.
The friends reaffirm their plan: Scottie will attend the next morning’s 9 a.m. session with Wilder posing as her husband. Scottie jokes about FaceTiming her ex, Matt, but Denise rejects involving him, calling him the devil, ending the night with cautious optimism about the improvised fix.
