Chapter 22
Contains spoilersOverview
Scottie and Wilder basked in the afterglow of their first night together, deepening emotional intimacy as Scottie contrasted Wilder’s care with her ex Matt’s neglect. They had another quick, intense sexual encounter before attending therapy with Sanders, where they openly admitted their intimacy, discussed communication fears, and were assigned to plan a fun date. Sanders insisted they avoid hiding in their cabin to build anticipation. Later, Scottie and Wilder chose a tandem bike date, briefly clashed with Chad, and reaffirmed their support for each other.
Summary
In bed after their first time having sex, Scottie felt cherished and safe with Wilder. She became emotional, realizing how neglected she had been by her ex-husband Matt and how Wilder’s attentiveness revealed what she deserved. Wilder reassured Scottie that their intimacy was not a one-time event and encouraged her to let go of Matt’s lingering impact.
The next morning, before therapy, Wilder initiated another quick, passionate encounter that reinforced their mutual desire and Scottie’s sense of being wanted. Wilder’s gentleness and intensity further contrasted with Scottie’s past, and he tenderly cared for her afterward.
At their counseling session, Sanders immediately noticed their charged dynamic. Wilder bluntly revealed they had sex, and both confirmed it went very well. Sanders framed their progress as a return to communication and asked about lingering miscommunication; Scottie admitted withholding feelings out of fear, and Sanders explained how common and harmful that is. He assigned them to spend the remaining days together, resolve issues, and present a practical plan for sustaining progress after camp, including going on a fun date chosen from the main building’s booklet.
When they left, Sanders intercepted them to forbid planning the date in their cabin, emphasizing anticipation and public connection over retreating to sex. He allowed a quick cabin visit for swimsuits only and reiterated the “move forward, not backward” guideline. Wilder teasingly and possessively called Scottie “my Pips,” which Scottie liked, underscoring their growing bond.
In the main building, Scottie and Wilder selected a tandem bike date with a picnic and floats. Chad appeared and made a derisive noise and a snide comment about rating camp sodas, which put Wilder on edge. Scottie defused the moment and guided Wilder away, and Wilder reaffirmed his protectiveness of Scottie while she encouraged him not to give Chad mental space. They agreed to do the tandem bike ride together.
