Chapter 17
Contains spoilersOverview
A week after the Fabergé egg theft, Molly grapples with the voided sale, scant insurance prospects, and a threatening note. While Detective Stark finds few leads and Angela launches an overzealous in-house search, Molly is stalked by a black car and confronted by a woman who reveals herself as Maggie, Molly’s long-absent mother, warning that the death threat is real and tied to dangerous criminals.
Summary
Molly reflects on how her hopeful future with Juan vanished after the egg’s theft and the menacing message, though Juan and others downplay the danger. In a Zoom call, Mr. Snow, Stanley Brown, and Barry Beagle confirm the auction is null, and the appraisers say insurance will pay little without costly legal action that Molly cannot afford.
Public and media attention has faded, which comforts Molly. She notes several silver linings: the show’s footage is impounded as evidence, hotel life is quieter despite slumping reservations, Detective Stark is pursuing a broad investigation that does not target Molly, and there is no concrete sign she is in active danger.
At the precinct, Detective Stark reports minimal progress after reviewing footage and interviewing guests, staff, and the Hidden Treasures crew. Stark urges vigilance from Molly and Angela. Back at the hotel, Angela persuades Mr. Snow to let her spearhead an exhaustive search. Molly cleans rooms with extra scrutiny, endures a tense exchange with Cheryl, and tries to ignore lingering fear.
After work, Juan and Speedy describe Angela’s disruptive sweep through the kitchen and lobby. Molly chooses to walk home alone despite lingering anxiety. As she leaves the upscale district for her neighborhood, a black car shadows her, corrals her into a dead-end alley, and stops short of hitting her.
A woman exits the car, insisting she is alone and there to warn Molly. She claims to have stolen the car to reach her and reveals intimate knowledge of the death threat and the egg. She says she watched the show with a former employer, a dangerous man, and admits she shared details about Molly, Gran, and the egg that she should not have.
Molly recognizes the woman as the “stranger at our door” from childhood who stole their rent money. The woman confirms she is Maggie—Molly’s mother. Maggie says she once worked at the Grimthorpe mansion, that Grimthorpe was abusive, and that she kept her own victimization secret from Gran before running away, later returning briefly to have and care for Molly before addiction took hold.
Maggie warns the threat is real: a gang she used to work for was paid well to execute the heist, and they would kill Molly if she finds the egg and kill Maggie for talking. She claims to be in a safe house. Maggie also asserts that Gran once took the Fabergé egg from the Grimthorpes out of desperation, calling it Gran’s deepest regret. When Maggie asks Molly for money, saying she risked herself to warn her, Molly refuses.
Maggie’s demeanor hardens. She tells Molly to beware of men in trench coats, then drives off, abandoning Molly yet again and leaving her shaken with new warnings and a painful family revelation.
