Chapter 33
Contains spoilersOverview
Molly and Angela eavesdropped on Stanley Brown and Barry Beagle via a vacuum outlet and captured Beagle’s full confession. Barry Beagle admitted orchestrating the egg theft to protect their brand, then revealed a bill of sale proving his grandfather legally bought the egg, planning to cash in later. Stanley Brown denounced Beagle’s actions. Detective Stark confirmed she monitored the setup and prepared to make a public arrest.
Summary
Molly and Angela rushed to the Regency Grand tearoom after the covert auction feed cut out. Molly ordered officers to hold the door and located a vacuum outlet on the stage that connected to the adjacent greenroom, removing its cover to listen in. Angela began recording on her phone as both lay on the floor to eavesdrop.
Inside the greenroom, Stanley Brown questioned Barry Beagle about why the egg had been stolen when they were poised to sell it. Beagle confessed he had arranged the theft to protect their reputations after recognizing the egg as tied to a family scandal. He revealed that his grandfather, Baron Beagle, had told him of a stolen prototype years earlier and, when ill, named the thief as a man named Braun.
Brown realized this implicated his own family: Algernon Braun (Brown’s father) and Brown’s grandfather, whom Beagle said had been a renowned, uncaught art thief who worked with his son. Beagle admitted he used criminal contacts to make the egg disappear and that the threatening note to “the maid” was intended only to halt the search, not to harm anyone.
Pressed on why he returned the egg, Beagle produced a crinkling document—an old bill of sale. Brown read off its features, recognizing the description of the egg and the House of Fabergé letterhead. Beagle argued the document proved Baron Beagle was the last legal owner, superseding the theft, and said they should lie low and later reveal provenance to multiply the egg’s value.
Brown condemned Beagle, saying he had tried to live clean and separate from his family’s criminal past, while Beagle tried to entice him with talk of wealth and luxury. Their exchange underscored a split between them, with Brown calling Beagle a thief.
Detective Stark entered the tearoom, signaled silence, and replaced the vacuum cover. She told Molly and Angela that she and Speedy had observed their move and piped audio from a backup mic, hearing everything but unable to record it. Angela confirmed she had captured the confession on her phone. Stark then proposed they watch her arrest a celebrity.
