Chapter 29
Contains spoilersOverview
At dawn, Molly, sleepless after finishing Flora's diary, urgently assembles Detective Stark, Mr. Preston, Angela, and Juan to share what she has deduced. She links the Fabergé egg to the Braun family and possibly the Beagles, proposing that the Bees are connected. The group plans a sting: stage a sale of the egg at the hotel with hidden surveillance to catch the Bees discussing their motives after the auction. Detective Stark asks for Molly’s agreement to proceed, and the team aligns around selling the egg to expose the culprits.
Summary
At 5 a.m., Juan finds Molly awake on the sofa, clutching Flora’s diary. Molly insists the diary explains everything, recounting to Juan how Flora Gray’s privileged but loveless upbringing, her parents’ cruelty, and Mrs. Mead’s nurturing presence shaped her, and how Flora and John Preston’s love anchored the story. Juan presses for the connection to the Fabergé egg, and Molly asserts Flora was not a thief and that the egg was rightfully Flora’s.
Molly outlines how the egg came to her via Flora’s life after leaving Gray Manor, emphasizing that the diary’s “blank spaces” reveal as much as the entries. She calls Detective Stark, then Mr. Preston (her gran-dad), and Angela to come over immediately. Juan prepares coffee and food as they wait.
When Mr. Preston arrives, Molly hugs him and shares that the diary deepened her understanding of Flora and John’s love, and of family connections: William Preston was the Gray family’s butler, Mrs. Mead’s Claddagh ring passed down to Flora and then Molly, and the tragedy of Mrs. Mead’s death. Angela and Detective Stark arrive, groggy but ready to listen.
Molly presents deductions from the diary and links them to the present: the “Bees” are connected through the Brauns and possibly the Beagles. She argues that Magnus and Priscilla Braun, originally investors, were also art collectors, and points to diary passages describing a house full of antiquities. She highlights that “Braun” translates to “Brown,” connecting to Stanley Brown. She reads Algernon Braun’s confession that father and son stole what they wanted and notes Flora’s mention of a baron art dealer involved with the Brauns.
The group connects the baron to the Beagle family: Juan recalls the baron portrait at Brown and Beagle’s office; Angela notes the baron died a year prior. While the diary never names the baron as a Beagle, Mr. Preston confirms a baron attended a Workers’ Ball at Gray Manor with Magnus Braun. Stark summarizes that Flora was linked to both the Braun and Beagle families through the egg, while Mr. Preston reiterates he never saw the egg until it appeared in Molly’s curio cabinet.
They debate why the Bees did not claim the egg publicly. Angela suggests they are hiding something. Stark warns against showing the diary to the Bees and proposes an ambush to expose the truth. Angela outlines a plan to follow the threatening note’s instruction—sell the egg—so that once a bid is placed and the Bees are alone, they will discuss their motives, which can be captured by hidden surveillance.
The team refines the plan: hold the auction again at the Regency Grand, but this time seed the space with covert cameras and microphones to overcome the hotel’s usual lack of surveillance. They agree to keep the diary secret as their leverage. Stark asks Molly to agree to sell the egg as part of the sting, and the group aligns on proceeding, with Stark concluding that selling the egg is the only way to “crack” the case.
