Chapter 13
Contains spoilersOverview
On the day of the live Hidden Treasures auction at the Regency Grand, Molly Gray is thrust into celebrity as crowds, cameras, and high-end bidders converge. The show stages her introduction and airs a manipulative sizzle reel before Baxley Brown conducts the auction, closing the sale at ten million dollars. In the instant after the gavel falls, Juan alerts everyone: the display case is empty. The Fabergé egg has vanished during the live broadcast.
Summary
Molly reflects on a week of unwanted fame and manufactured moments, worrying about how money and attention might change her and Juan. She recalls a staged kiss reshoot at home that left both feeling exploited. Mr. Preston drives Molly and Juan to the Regency Grand for the morning auction, where a crowd of fans and VIP bidders swarms the entrance; Speedy helps them inside while Mr. Snow struggles to control a roped-off lobby of Bee & Bee VIPs and serious dealers.
Inside the tearoom, the setup is transformed for a televised event: numbered paddles at each seat, rows of desks with rotary phones for call-in bidders, and thrones for Baxley Brown, Thomas Beagle, and a monogrammed M throne for Molly. Angela, tasked with running the event, is frazzled but keeps things moving. Armed guards wheel in the Fabergé egg in a glass display case. Steve outlines the run of show, positioning Molly onstage and Juan in the front row as a cutaway reaction.
When they go live, Brown and Beagle hype Molly’s sudden fame and queue a sizzle reel of her week. The edited footage exaggerates and misrepresents moments—especially at the bridal shop—prompting Molly to note that reality differed. The hosts pivot to the auction, and Brown delivers a grand provenance speech, calling the egg a unique prototype that inspired the imperial Romanov eggs, before opening bidding at five million dollars.
As bidding escalates through phone representatives and in-room paddles, Brown’s patter narrows the field to three contenders. He urges the room past nine figures by invoking Molly’s pop culture status. Madame Orange’s phone client reaches ten million, and after brief silence, Brown hammers the gavel: sold at ten million even. The theme music swells and the hosts move to close the live show amid polite applause.
Suddenly, Juan shouts from the front row—“El huevo!”—and waves frantically at the display. Molly follows his gaze to the center-stage case, which remains under a spotlight but is now empty. In the moment after the sale is declared, the Fabergé egg has disappeared from inside its locked display case.
