Chapter 3

Molly recalls the morning leading up to the Hidden Treasures taping at the Regency Grand, where she manages special events and her fiancé Juan Manuel oversees pastry. Staff and guests assemble as the show unexpectedly films preshow appraisals, and Molly brings a shoebox of Gran’s keepsakes. Onstage, Brown and Beagle dismiss most items but identify Molly’s bejeweled egg as a unique Fabergé prototype worth at least five million dollars, prompting Molly to faint amid uproar.
Summary
The chapter opens with Molly disoriented amid media chaos after the appraisal reveal, hearing Juan Manuel call to her and Gran’s reassuring voice in her mind. She flashes back to that morning as she and Juan walk to the Regency Grand Hotel, where Molly reflects on her promotion to Head Maid & Special Events Manager and Juan’s rise to Head of Pastry. They admire the hotel and discuss the upcoming event, with Juan teasing her that sometimes a teacup is just a teacup.
Outside the hotel, they greet Mr. Preston, the retired doorman who is also Molly’s grandfather, and Speedy, the eager young doorman. Mr. Preston plans to bring a signed J. D. Grimthorpe novel for appraisal. Inside, the lobby buzzes with “Bee-lievers” and a harried Angela running crowd control; a humorous exchange about a jar claiming to hold Napoleon’s toilet paper underscores the frenzy.
In the Grand Tearoom, Molly finds the Hidden Treasures crew already setting up. Mr. Snow introduces Steve, the showrunner, who announces immediate filming and requires appearance waivers. Molly alerts Juan to bring staff and her name tag. The celebrity hosts, Baxley Brown and Thomas Beagle, arrive to fanfare as staff and audience file in. Juan pins Molly’s name tag, and she organizes staff into an appraisal line.
Mr. Snow goes first, presenting a Waltham pocket watch; Brown and Beagle appraise it at about two hundred dollars, noting sentimental but not market value, while ribbing Mr. Snow for his nerves. Speedy follows with what he claims is a Roman coin, but the hosts reveal it is a modern 1980 penny featuring Queen Elizabeth, worth only a penny.
Molly then takes the stage with her shoebox of Gran’s items: a Royal Standard teacup, souvenir spoons, a Swarovski swan, a skeleton key, and a jeweled egg on a gold pedestal. The hosts briefly note the key could be from an Edwardian diary but focus on the egg. Examining it with a loupe, they identify flawless jewels and a pure 24-karat gold pedestal with distinctive cabriolet feet, consistent with the House of Fabergé.
Brown and Beagle conclude the egg is a one-of-a-kind prototype that inspired the imperial Fabergé eggs, a hidden treasure unique in the world, and estimate its minimum value at five million dollars. The audience erupts, cameras close in, and voices shout that Molly is a multimillionaire. Overwhelmed by the revelation, Molly’s vision sparkles and she blacks out.
