Chapter 21
Contains spoilersOverview
Molly unlocks Flora Gray’s diary but hesitates to read it in front of others, agreeing instead to lie low at home while Detective Stark investigates Maggie Gray. The next day, Molly distracts herself with cleaning and memories of Gran’s integrity before finally opening the diary to begin reading. The chapter shifts the stakes from waiting and hiding to an urgent development at the Regency Grand.
Summary
Molly sits with Juan, Gran-dad, Angela, and Detective Stark as she unlocks Flora Gray’s diary. Overwhelmed by the sight of Flora’s handwriting and a salutation addressed to her, Molly locks the diary again and sets it aside, with Gran-dad reassuring her that Flora intended her to read it only when ready.
Detective Stark downplays the diary’s relevance to the current investigation and turns focus to Maggie Gray, planning to check records and possible affiliations. Gran-dad notes Maggie’s given name is Margaret and mentions she was named after his aunt, a detail new to Molly. Stark advises Molly to lie low and stay home from work for a day or two, and despite Molly’s reluctance, Juan, Angela, and Gran-dad support the plan.
The next morning, Molly chafes at staying home but ultimately accepts it after Juan’s gentle insistence. After breakfast and Juan’s departure, Molly resolves to keep busy by deep-cleaning, beginning with Gran’s curio cabinet and polishing a souvenir spoon from Killarney. The spoon prompts a memory of Gran’s lessons on honesty, restraint, and generosity, when they took only one item from a giveaway box after asking permission.
Reflecting on Gran’s character, Molly questions Maggie’s accusation that Flora stole the Fabergé egg, finding it incompatible with Flora’s values. She turns to the diary, unlocks it again, and prepares to start reading from the “Dear Molly” opening.
Just as Molly is about to read, Mr. Snow calls. He asks Mr. Preston to bring her to the Regency Grand immediately and informs her that the Fabergé egg has been found, shifting the investigation and drawing Molly back to the hotel.
