Chapter 49: Colossus

Overview

Victra secures the Colossus as Antonia abandons the Society fleet, tipping the battle. Darrow rejects pursuit, instead deceiving Romulus and covertly steering the captured dreadnought to annihilate Ganymede’s dockyards, crippling the Rim’s future shipbuilding. Bearing the moral cost, he and Victra fire, and Sefi renames the ship Morning Star.

Summary

In the aftermath of Roque’s death, Victra takes command of the Colossus, forcing the Blues to choose obedience or captivity. Holiday escorts dissenters out. On a private link, Orion and Daxo report that Sevro fights aboard a secondary flagship and that Telemanuses and Raa forces strike for Antonia. Darrow, numbed by grief, closes Roque’s eyes at Sefi’s urging.

Orion spots Antonia’s Pandora peeling away from the engagement, opening a decisive gap. The Rising pushes into the flank, but Victra demands a chase. Darrow overrides her, ordering radio silence and no broadcast of their capture. He sets a course not for Pandora, but for Ganymede, intent on “winning the next war.”

Darrow answers a call from Romulus, pretending he is still fighting to reach the Colossus bridge while warning that the ship is headed for Ganymede. He suggests Roque might target the docks with nukes, prompting Romulus’s plea to stop “Roque.” Ending the call, Darrow orders memory wipes and shoot-to-kill on any leaks, accepting the strategic cost of crippling the Rim’s industrial future.

The Colossus breaks free of the wreckage and speeds for Ganymede, swatting down Rim interceptors. As evacuation pods bloom from the vast orbital yards, Holiday questions the civilian toll. Victra, sharing the burden, gives the firing order; alongside Darrow, she unleashes batteries and torpedoes that tear the two-hundred-kilometer docks apart. “Death begets death begets death…” echoes in Darrow’s mind as debris rains toward the moon.

Sefi and the Valkyrie watch in awe and fear at the scale of destruction. To mark the ship’s new allegiance and destiny, Darrow asks Sefi to rename the dreadnought. She christens it Tyr Morga—Morning Star.
