Chapter 33: Gods and Men
Contains spoilersOverview
Darrow’s ruse draws two Asgard “gods.” He and Mustang kill Freya and mortally wound Proctor Mercury, exposing the gods as Golds. Sefi accepts the truth, arms herself with a razor, and the Valkyrie rally. Mustang presses for armory codes and prepares the Obsidian force to confront the remaining five gods.
Summary
Guided by a priest into Asgard’s temple, Darrow, Mustang, Sefi, Holiday, and the Valkyrie kneel and claim to have seen a fallen ship. Two armored Golds reveal themselves as the “gods” Freya and Loki, scrutinizing the supposed Obsidian pilgrims while Sefi trembles, fearing the deities might be real.
The interrogators grow suspicious, prompting Mustang to drop her disguise and identify the razor’s Andromedus sigil. Seizing the moment, Darrow snatches the blade, severs Freya’s arm and head, and hurls the razor into Loki’s chest; Mustang kicks the hilt, driving it through his armor. Holiday prevents communications and disarms the wounded Gold.
Unmasked, Loki is revealed as Proctor Mercury from the Institute. He reels at seeing the Reaper, learns Quicksilver hacked Asgard’s systems, and warns Mustang not to unleash the Obsidians, calling it Pandora’s box. Mustang coldly demands the armory codes, refusing his premise that the Obsidians are monsters.
Sefi tests Freya’s blood and finds it human. Darrow places Freya’s razor in Sefi’s hands, teaching the controls; she shapes it into a slingBlade, thrilling the Valkyrie. With the myth of divinity shattered and morale surging, Mustang points to the remaining five gods, urging Sefi’s warriors to meet and unseat them next.
