Darrow grants the Jackal a holo audience and rejects his provocations, pitying his emptiness. Mustang joins, denounces Adrius for murdering Claudius, Quinn, and Pax, and severs their bond. Darrow vows to break Mars and hang the Jackal. After the call, Darrow and Mustang reaffirm their resolve and future together.
Summary
Darrow meets the Jackal’s lifelike holo alone in the Morning Star’s training room, refusing to let the enemy taint other spaces. The Jackal needles Darrow about the wedding and Roque, then graphically recounts Quinn’s death to provoke him. Mustang quietly arrives, listening as Darrow counters that Roque believed in something and that the Jackal’s cruelty masks emptiness.
The Jackal brandishes the jackal-topped scepter Darrow once gifted him and admits his father’s seat is not what he expected. Darrow refuses hatred, offering pity and diagnosing Adrius’s need to matter to himself. The Jackal accuses Darrow of sharing his hunger for power, claiming that appetite makes them alike and alone.
Mustang steps forward, arguing that Darrow knew love while Adrius only covets. The Jackal lashes out with slurs. Mustang asserts their mother loved him and reveals she knows he had their brother Claudius killed; she cannot forgive him. Her declaration shatters any pretense of family loyalty.
Darrow promises they will break the Jackal’s fleet, storm Mars, breach his bunker, and hang him. The connection ends. In the quiet aftermath, Mustang cries, then asks if victory is possible. Darrow embraces her, promising a shared life ahead. They linger, choosing hope and each other before returning to the celebration, aware their love must endure the coming war.
