Chapter Twenty-Nine
Contains spoilersOverview
Gene leaves after the revelation about Francesca, and Bill retreats to his bungalow, shattered and distant despite Lila’s pleas. Lila encounters Jensen with another woman, confirming his anger and withdrawal. Seeking solace, Lila calls Gabriel; their talk shifts into sexual intimacy over the phone, briefly buoying her before domestic life intrudes.
Summary
Lila is haunted by Bill’s devastated reaction to discovering Francesca’s secret affair with Gene. Gene slips out of the house, leaving Lila a terse apology note that she discards, and she feels only regret for letting him back into their lives.
Bill ignores Lila’s calls, then receives her at his bungalow looking frail and shaken. He insists on time alone and later sends Penelope for medications. When Bill returns to collect clothes, Lila urges him to come home, insisting Francesca truly loved him. Bill struggles to reconcile Francesca’s choice, recalling a period of her distance and a supposed visit to Dorothy in Nottingham, which he now understands masked her trip to Gene. He admits he avoids emotional confrontations and quietly says his home may now be at the bungalow, leaving behind Francesca’s portrait.
On Friday, Lila buys flowers for Bill and unexpectedly meets Jensen at the supermarket with a self-possessed red‑haired woman. Jensen is curt, and the woman pointedly tells Lila she should be sorry before steering Jensen away, deepening Lila’s humiliation and loss.
At home, dinner with Celie and Violet dissolves into quarrels, and Lila withholds the full truth by saying Bill is at the bungalow and Gene is away for work. Drained, she cleans up, walks the dog, then retreats to a bath and calls Gabriel for comfort.
Lila recounts the attic discovery and Bill’s pain. Gabriel frames Bill’s reaction as wounded pride and updates her on his busy work and Lennie’s school play. The conversation turns flirtatious when Gabriel learns Lila is in the bath; they engage in explicit phone intimacy, which leaves Gabriel audibly satisfied and Lila giddy, though she lies about climaxing. Gabriel promises they will see each other after his hectic week.
The call ends abruptly when Violet barges into the bathroom with an urgent plea for the toilet, snapping Lila back to domestic reality.
