Summary
Lila, reeling from Gene’s denial to Bill about Francesca, struggles to focus as Violet confidently begins narrating Peter Pan. She scans the audience, notes Philippa and Gabriel, and feels only irritation toward Gabriel now.
The curtain reveals a surprise: Peter Pan and the cast wear Gene’s Star Squadron Zero costumes, with the script tweaked into a space adventure. Lila recognizes the alien that once frightened her as a child. The chaotic, endearing performance unfolds with laughter, songs, and makeshift musicians, while Lila grows tender toward Jensen, who holds her hand.
Hugo, playing Michael, freezes when prompted to speak. A hush falls until Celie stands to cheer him on; Lila joins, leading the audience’s encouragement. With Wendy’s whisper, Hugo finally says, “I—I knew Peter Pan would save us,” earning a roar of applause. Lila, Jensen, and Celie share a tearful, unifying moment.
After the show, Mrs. Tugendhat praises the production and credits Gene’s weeks of volunteer help and costumes, calling him a born teacher. Bill, tired and newly relieved by Gene’s earlier claim, departs proudly, asking Lila to congratulate Violet.
Backstage, Lila watches Gene buoyantly praise children. She confronts him: he lied to Bill. Gene says he did it because Francesca only wanted Bill and it felt right. He admits seeing the girls daily to reassure them and apologizes for not telling Lila. Their standoff softens into an embrace, and Lila allows herself to lean on him.
Gene shares plans to attend a Comic Con in Seattle for money but insists he will return and hopes to find local work. Lila confirms he will come home with them, and Violet happily claims more time with Gene, though Gene deflects a risqué episode suggestion.
In the lobby, amid milling parents, Lila looks for Jensen. A commotion reveals Jessie throwing red wine in Gabriel Mallory’s face and calling him an “absolute knob,” chastising his mother as well. Passing Lila, Jessie warmly asks her out for a drink; Lila enthusiastically agrees.
