There, a drunken girl stumbles into Alice. The girl's scent and pulse trigger Alice's thirst, and after brief flirtation, they kiss. New to her vampiric hunger and seeking to quell her panic, Alice bites the girl's neck but resolves to stop before doing lasting harm, modeling herself after Lottie's restraint rather than Sabine's brutality. She withdraws, the girl dazed but alive, and Alice begins to speak.

A voice interrupts from right behind Alice, and the sound unlocks the buried memory of the night of Alice's turning. Sabine, revealed in the flesh, reaches past Alice and snaps the girl's neck, saying Alice should "always finish what you start." The victim collapses dead at Alice's feet as Alice recognizes Sabine, the figure Lottie had described as both mythic monster and maker.

Sabine appears as a striking, tall woman in violet lace with black, lightless eyes and a voice that soothes and compels. Alice experiences the dangerous lure of Sabine's will and the terror it provokes. She tries to anchor herself by repeating Lottie's name and attempting to look for Lottie in the crowd, but Sabine seizes Alice's chin, asserting control and promising they will find Charlotte later.

Sabine then issues a direct command—"Come with me"—and the command overwhelms Alice's senses. The music, lights, and all sensation vanish as if every source were cut at once. The chapter closes with Alice's perception going completely black, implying Sabine has compelled and removed Alice from the club.
