Chapter VIII
Contains spoilersOverview
Sabine, Hector, and Renata approach a church planning another massacre, but the town has laid a trap. Hector and Renata are captured, sealed in coffins, and burned while Sabine, weakened by the pull of nearby graves, hides and endures a near-fatal collapse. At dusk, freed from Renata's binding by Renata's death, Sabine lures and kills a sympathetic boy to regain strength. She leaves the cemetery, recognizing she has survived while Hector and Renata have not.
Summary
On a snowy winter night, Sabine, Hector, and Renata head toward a church intending to slaughter the congregation. As they near the building, Sabine senses a strange stillness and notices a child at a window who silently warns her about the church. The church doors open and a mob erupts, revealing an ambush.
Villagers swarm Hector and Renata with torches, chains, and weapons, subduing them despite their resistance. Sabine, bound by Renata's compulsion yet recognizing she cannot save them, slips into the adjacent cemetery. There, she is struck by a crippling weakness as the presence of death drags at her, making her body wither and her heart feel seized, in line with Renata's warning that death calls to death.
Sabine staggers into a crypt to escape the mob and the daylight, listening as Hector and Renata are nailed into coffins and set ablaze. She endures a fevered, sun-sick haze through the day, haunted by memories and the press of the grave, until dusk. When she emerges, she sees the coffins reduced to ash and feels the moment Renata's binding severed with Renata's death.
Exhausted and still pinned by the cemetery's pull, Sabine collapses on the ground, believing she cannot rise despite her intact heart. A teenage boy approaches, mistaking her for a grieving mourner, and offers help. Sabine admits she has lost everyone, then seizes him and feeds, his strong blood reviving her.
Strength renewed, Sabine reaches the cemetery's edge, breaking the graveyard's hold the instant she steps onto the path. She looks back at the smoldering remains and acknowledges that Hector and Renata are dead while she has survived. Snow begins to fall as she departs into the night, alone but alive.
