Chapter 6
Overview
Moira brings Amelia to independent timekeeper James Gravel, secretly recording their talk to gather evidence of rebel affiliations. Alone with Amelia, James explains that Lisavet Levy hid burned memories in the missing blue, flower-stamped book and that “rebels” follow her mission against government control of history, while implying Moira’s rise and secrecy tie to Lisavet and Ernest’s death.
Amelia discovers the planted transmitter, and Moira uses a gun to force their exit, confirming the setup. On the drive, Moira unexpectedly orders Amelia to destroy the tape to prevent Jack Dillinger from targeting James and other rebels, and she admits she met Ernest the night he died—an explosive secret she insists Jack must never learn.
Summary
After a tense, mostly silent dinner, Amelia snaps at Moira for pushing her into the time space and for trying to “take care” of her. Moira brusquely announces that they will visit a colleague of Ernest’s the next morning, refusing to explain further. That night Amelia cannot sleep, then calms herself by reading Aurora Leigh until she finally dozes off.
The next day Moira drives Amelia into a poorer part of Boston, nervously chain-smoking, and reveals they are visiting James Gravel, an independent timekeeper whom the department suspects of belonging to the “rebellion.” At a pawnshop apartment, Moira flashes a badge and claims they are asking questions about Ernest Duquesne’s murder; James is hostile, insisting the department has already harassed him. Moira frames the visit as helping Ernest’s niece and pushes Amelia forward, then steps outside, leaving Amelia alone with James.
James softens toward Amelia and explains why he distrusts the department: he refused to surrender his watch or serve their agenda and focuses on preserving Black history that officials would rather suppress. When Amelia asks about the blue book with a flower, James confirms it exists but says it has been missing for years, then tells Amelia about Lisavet Levy—a Jewish girl hidden in the time space during the 1940s who saved “burned” memories by keeping them in that book. James says Ernest discovered Lisavet in 1946, and that after Lisavet vanished around 1952, “rebels” continued her mission; he suggests Moira and Jack Dillinger use “rebels” as a label for anyone opposing their control of memory. He also implies Moira may know more about Lisavet’s fate and hints Moira’s sudden rise in the department was suspicious.
James then reveals a more immediate accusation: Ernest visited him shortly before dying, passing through on the way to New York to see Moira about troubling events at the department, meaning Moira was likely the last person to see Ernest alive. James urges Amelia to seek “timekeepers with blue flowers” (forget-me-nots for Lisavet) if she needs help. Amelia discovers a hidden transmitter on her person and realizes Moira has been listening; Moira re-enters, confirms she set it up, and forces James to let them leave by raising a revolver under his chin.
In Moira’s POV, she worries the recorded conversation contains details Jack Dillinger does not know and could use against her. She drives to a bridge, hands the cassette to Amelia, and tells her to destroy it, offering to report the mic “malfunctioned” and to protect James and other rebels from Jack’s retaliation. Moira admits she did see Ernest the night he died—something Jack does not know—and insists it must stay hidden; she deflects accusations about Lisavet by pointing out she joined the department in 1955, after Lisavet’s 1952 disappearance, while acknowledging the files are sealed and Jack might know more. After Moira asks for trust, Amelia throws the tape into the river, and they drive home in silence.
