Chapter 18
Overview
Ernest admits his relationship with Moira to Jack, only to learn Jack has known for months and intends to exploit it. Jack uses the moment to test Moira’s loyalty by capturing Russian timekeeper Vasily Stepanov, who hints that Lisavet Levy’s child may still be alive and that others oppose the TRP’s destruction of memories.
When Vasily takes Moira hostage, Moira stops Time, interrogates him about the missing child, and kills him to protect Amelia’s secrecy. The aftermath strains Moira and Ernest, but Ernest later meets Vasily’s son Anton in the time space, is warned off revenge by Azrael, and reconciles with Moira—deciding to bring her into his family by introducing her to Amelia and planning to propose.
Summary
In 1958 Washington, DC, Moira anxiously waits while Ernest meets with Jack Dillinger after confessing that Ernest and Moira are romantically involved. When Ernest emerges, he says Jack wants to see Moira and seems unangry. Inside Jack’s office, Jack reveals he already knew, even having Fred Vance tail them, and he frames Ernest as the man who once made Moira “vulnerable.” Jack allows the relationship to continue for now, hinting he may use it later.
Jack then assigns Moira to help with a new objective: intercepting a Russian timekeeper, Vasily Stepanov. Moira recognizes Vasily as the man who once followed her in the time space and took her memory book. Jack gives Moira a familiar revolver “just in case,” adding that Vasily knows about Lisavet Levy, making Moira suspect this is a loyalty test timed to Ernest’s confession.
After hours of waiting, Brady and Vance drag in a struggling Vasily. Jack questions him about interfering with TRP operations and “saving memories,” and Vasily says he was once sent to find Lisavet Levy but changed his mind when he saw she was pregnant. He implies the child may still exist “out of Time,” refuses to reveal what happened to Lisavet’s book, and provokes Jack by suggesting the TRP fears what the memories would show.
When Jack orders Moira to “clean this up” by handling Vasily’s notebook, Vasily escapes, seizes Brady’s gun, and takes Moira hostage at gunpoint. Moira stops Time, disarms him, and interrogates him herself about Lisavet’s child; Vasily claims he saw Lisavet take the baby into a memory and return alone, and that he has been searching for the child in the memories Americans try to destroy. Fearing that any wider “we” could expose Amelia, Moira shoots Vasily before restarting Time, then coldly directs Brady to send Vasily’s watch back to Russia as a warning. Jack is shaken by Moira’s display of power and the reminder that she can do things beyond his control.
Ernest later finds Moira bloodstained, but she refuses to explain, and Jack silently enforces secrecy. Weeks of distance follow, ending in a fight where Ernest, frustrated and jealous of Jack’s control over Moira, blurts a suspicion about Moira and Jack; Moira is hurt and leaves. Two days later in the time space, Ernest finds a terrified Russian boy—Anton Stepanov—who believes Americans killed his father; Ernest comforts him, helps him navigate and escape, and withholds the full truth.
Ernest confronts Azrael about Vasily’s death; Azrael refuses to “meddle” and warns that retaliation would endanger Ernest and Amelia. Ernest backs down, asks Azrael to help keep an eye on Anton, and then goes to Moira to apologize. Ernest tells Moira he loves her, says he wants her to meet Amelia in the summer, and privately resolves to propose marriage.
