Chapter 13
Overview
Amelia seeks help from James Gravel but finds his shop destroyed by a federal raid triggered by her earlier contact. James reveals Ernest Duquesne was part of a resistance stealing watches and that Lisavet Levy’s memory book changed Ernest’s plans, making Anton Stepanov a hunted target.
Jack Dillinger arrives and shoots James, but Amelia unexpectedly stops Time through temporal departure. Moira disarms Jack, kills Fred, traps Amelia inside the time space to pursue Anton and the book, then resumes Time and executes Jack—confirming her rebellion and revealing Amelia is the child born outside of Time.
Summary
In 1965 Boston, Amelia drives to James Gravel’s pawnshop using an address taken from Moira Donnelly’s handbag. She finds the storefront smashed and learns from two local men that federal agents raided the Gravels’ home and shop after Amelia’s earlier visit, frightening James’s family and forcing Edith to take the children out of the city.
Inside, James tries to throw Amelia out, blaming her for bringing danger, but he relents when he sees Amelia’s injuries. In the back room, Amelia identifies Anton Stepanov by his blue flower, and James confirms Anton is part of the resistance. James shows Amelia a locked box holding seven stolen TRP watches, explaining that Amelia’s uncle Ernest Duquesne stole watches from the department as part of a plan to cripple government timekeeping organizations, and that Ernest changed course after finding Lisavet Levy’s memory book.
Before James can do more, shouting outside signals pursuers. James hurriedly opens a time-space door with his watch, but the shop is stormed; a shot drops James, and Jack Dillinger enters with Fred and Moira, all armed. As Jack threatens Amelia and prepares to shoot, Amelia’s fear triggers a sudden freeze of the room: everyone is suspended in Time except Amelia and Moira.
Moira reveals the phenomenon is temporal departure, where mind and body exist on separate planes of time, and tells Amelia that Amelia is causing the stop. In the frozen moment, Moira has fired at Fred, leaving the bullet hanging midair, and calmly disarms Jack. Moira orders Amelia into the time space to find Anton and the book, promising to return soon; Amelia protests that she has no watch and will be trapped, but Moira apologizes and forcibly pushes Amelia through the door, sealing her inside.
With Amelia gone, Moira resumes Time; Fred is instantly killed as the suspended bullet completes its path. Jack, disoriented, pieces together Moira’s long rebellion, realizes Ernest is likely alive, and identifies Amelia as the child “born outside of Time” whom Moira once claimed was dead. After Jack asks Moira not to burn his memories, Moira promises she won’t, and executes him with two shots.
