Chapter 22
Overview
Lisavet returns to the time space, learns Amelia now knows everything, and recruits a furious Anton to stop Ernest from sacrificing himself to seal the place off. Anton forces Ernest out through a door, but Lisavet then decides she must be the one to make the sacrifice and sends Amelia away by pushing her into the chasm with a watch.
To permanently end the time space’s interference, Lisavet erases the origin of its discovery by altering Azrael’s memory and killing his living past self before the Romans can extract his secrets. The time space begins collapsing around Lisavet as history starts to rewrite itself.
Summary
Lisavet returns to the time space after thirteen years and is greeted by Azrael, who tells her Amelia is safe and now knows the truth. Lisavet says she has come to fix the damage by sealing the time space from interference, and Azrael agrees to stay hidden close to her while Ernest is with Amelia.
Wandering in shock among the shelves, Lisavet is ambushed by Anton Stepanov, who holds her at gunpoint over her killing of his father. Lisavet admits what she did, argues it was to protect Amelia, and refuses to fight him. After she disarms him to prove she could have killed him, Anton chooses to help stop Ernest, insisting he is doing it for Amelia and Ernest, not for Lisavet. Lisavet hands Anton her watch and leads him onward.
Elsewhere, Ernest presses his watch into Amelia’s hand and orders her to leave the time space and find Anton, admitting he intends to stay behind—trapped—so he can “take care of” something. Lisavet arrives and confronts Ernest; she reveals Ernest plans to sacrifice himself to seal off the time space. To stop him, Lisavet signals Anton, who restrains Ernest and forces him through a door out of the time space while Amelia protests.
Amelia turns on Lisavet, accusing her of lying and of the violence done in Amelia’s name. Lisavet admits it was wrong but insists she would do it again to keep Amelia safe, then says she must stay behind because Ernest’s plan is the only option—and she must do it herself to prevent Ernest from doing it. When Amelia refuses to leave, Lisavet wraps her father’s coat around Amelia, slips a brass pocket watch into the pocket, and shoves Amelia into the chasm, sending her away.
With Amelia gone, Lisavet and Azrael prepare the true fix: changing the first discovery of the time space by altering Azrael’s past. Lisavet pulls the remaining threads of Azrael’s memory into the book of forgotten names, then inserts herself into a memory two thousand years earlier and pushes the living Azrael off a cliff into the sea so the Romans never find him or his secrets. Returning, Lisavet watches the time space splinter and collapse—shelves turning to dust, the book disintegrating, and the chasm cracking open beneath her—while she stares up at the stars.
