Cameron avoids opening the box Aunt Jeanne brought from his mother’s trailer, hoping it might hold something to pawn for rent. When Katie comes home early, he lies about having the day off for “International Contractors’ Day,” but the active construction next door exposes the lie. She leaves for a dentist appointment, done “giving chances.”

That evening, Katie returns and silently tosses Cameron’s belongings off the balcony. Cameron admits he was fired again but pleads to talk; Katie ends the relationship and insists he leave immediately. He grabs the box, feeling unexpectedly protective of it, and waits on the curb for help.

Brad eventually picks him up. At Brad and Elizabeth’s suburban home, Cameron drinks a beer, stewing over the security other people’s families afford them. Brad allows him two nights on the couch, warning him not to damage the new furniture.

They discuss Cameron’s next steps. Brad points out that with no job and poor credit, new downtown apartments are unrealistic. Spurred by necessity, Cameron decides to ask Old Al about renting the apartment above Dell’s, though he may need to settle his bar tab first.

Brad then confesses he’s quitting their band, Moth Sausage, because of the baby, leaving Cameron stunned and hollow about the future. Cameron ends the night making up the couch, the unopened box beside him, as Brad jokes about “baby vipers.”
