Busted But Loyal
Contains spoilersOverview
Tova, immobilized by a sprained ankle, receives a casserole and an old cellphone from Janice, along with news that Mary Ann is moving away. The phone’s sudden buzzing startles Tova into dropping dinner and falling again, sharpening her fears about aging and independence. She resolves to consider applying to Charter Village.
Summary
Tova recalls Erik’s childhood rescue of a maimed crab, “Eight-Legged Eddie,” whose handmade grave marker reads “Busted but loyal.” Now wearing a medical boot for six weeks after her sprain, Tova identifies with the crab’s struggle and resents the chores she cannot do at home and the aquarium.
Janice arrives unannounced with a casserole from Barb and probes Tova about her fall, even suggesting an attorney after hearing workplace rumors. Over coffee, Janice confirms Tova saw Dr. Remy. Tova omits the doctor’s caution about returning to work and a bone-density test, unwilling to invite further concern.
Janice shares major news: Mary Ann is moving to Spokane to live with her daughter, selling her house. The Knit-Wits will shrink to three, raising questions about their future gatherings. They plan a farewell luncheon, and Janice prepares to leave for lunch with her son.
Before departing, Janice insists Tova keep Timothy’s old cellphone for safety. Tova resists but finally accepts, agreeing to a tutorial. Later, as Tova removes the hot casserole from the oven, the new phone suddenly vibrates with an unknown caller; startled, she drops the dish, slips in the spill, and falls hard. She struggles to a chair and settles for chicken and rice on the couch.
That evening, Tova reflects on Mary Ann’s move, her friends’ family arrangements, and Will’s death and the paperwork she handled alone. Confronting her own vulnerability—the stairs, driveway, and an ordinary kitchen hazard—she worries about being found after a future fall. Remembering a packet from Charter Village, she decides it may be time to fill out the application.
