Summary
Cameron arrives at Avery’s small house and is surprised when her fifteen-year-old son, Marco, appears. The brief, awkward introduction rattles Cameron, but he finds himself impressed by Avery’s steady parenting. They leave in Cameron’s camper for a planned paddleboarding date, trading jokes about his lack of swimwear and money.
At the shore, Avery teaches Cameron the basics. He repeatedly falls into the frigid water but improves as they circle the jetty. Near the pier, they pause in its shadow, where Avery watches teens doing risky stunts and leads Cameron into conversation about her move from Seattle, co-parenting with Marco’s father, and life in Sowell Bay.
Avery reveals she once talked a stranger down from jumping off the pier, emphasizing listening over lecturing. The confession opens space for Cameron to share his unresolved pain about his mother leaving him with Aunt Jeanne and disappearing. Avery reframes the abandonment as a difficult choice made to help him, and she also admits she nearly chose adoption at seventeen before deciding to raise Marco.
They head back, and a furious seagull’s squawk startles Cameron into another dunk. Their mishaps turn playful as Cameron tips Avery in; their attraction peaks in the water, where they embrace and kiss. Avery then challenges him to race back to shore, their easy competitiveness sealing a new level of closeness.
