Chapter Twenty-One
Overview
At Luna’s Temple, Ruhn reveals research connecting the stolen Luna’s Horn to the kristallos demon Bryce encountered the night Danika died. The trio concludes someone is summoning the demon to hunt the Horn within Lunathion and plans to track it using Ruhn’s Starborn affinity. Outside, Hunt discreetly mobilizes support and battles old wounds as he prepares to inform his superiors.
Summary
Ruhn waits, cloaked in shadows, within Luna’s Temple and meets Bryce and Hunt amid a tourist group. He reveals the Autumn King has tasked him to recover the stolen Luna’s Horn and points to the statue’s empty hands. Using photos from the Fae Archives, Ruhn explains the Horn’s origins with Prince Pelias and the First Wars.
Ruhn shows an illustration of the kristallos, a demon bred by the Star-Eater to hunt the Horn. Bryce recognizes it as the demon from the night Danika died. They establish that the Horn cracked when Pelias sealed the Northern Rift, its power seemingly broken, and that it was later displayed in this temple until its theft two years ago.
They debate the two-year gap and infer that someone may now be summoning the kristallos to find the Horn, likely still within Lunathion. Ruhn admits his Starborn power may help locate it; a forbidden book seemed to “shimmer” for him in the Archives. The plan emerges: track the Horn through Ruhn’s affinity, knowing the kristallos may come for whoever holds it.
Outside, Hunt calls Justinian to search databases for the kristallos and notes rising tensions ahead of Sandriel’s arrival. Justinian prods Hunt about his lingering grief over Shahar; Hunt ends the call, resolved to inform Isaiah and Micah about the Horn while dreading collaboration with Ruhn.
