Chapter Thirty-Eight
Contains spoilersOverview
Hunt and Bryce zero in on Sabine as their prime suspect after Isaiah’s notes recall her damning words and the swapped footage points to her investigation. They theorize political motives against Micah and decide to catch Sabine with the demon while awaiting Viktoria’s results. Shaken, Bryce’s late run reveals a lingering injury, prompting Hunt’s protective support.
Summary
In the aftermath of Declan’s discovery about the swapped footage, Hunt argues that Sabine could be orchestrating the demon killings, noting her knowledge of city cameras and her authority over case evidence. Bryce resists the idea that Sabine would kill Danika, but admits it’s possible. Hunt calls Isaiah, who reads his notes from the night of Danika’s death, quoting Sabine’s bitter remarks about Danika and Bryce. The recollection hardens their suspicion.
They hypothesize that Danika may have seen Sabine steal the Horn, explaining the silenced witnesses and the footage swap. Hunt suggests the White Raven bombing could have been intimidation or misdirection. Bryce doubts Sabine would summon a kristallos if she possessed the Horn, but Hunt proposes a broader political motive: undermining Micah, perhaps even with Sandriel’s tacit support. They agree the next step is to catch Sabine with the demon and hope Viktoria can retrieve incriminating footage.
Restless and raw, Bryce decides to go for a 1 a.m. run. Hunt refuses to let her go alone and keeps pace beside her through the city while she obsesses over Sabine and the murders. As they push on, Bryce’s old leg injury flares, but she forces herself to continue.
They return to her apartment after an hour with Bryce limping badly. Hunt presses about the injury; Bryce minimizes it, claiming she’ll ice it and that it’s been checked. She thanks him for coming along. Hunt, still concerned, lets her retreat to her room as their plan and suspicions solidify.
