Ryan narrates Jet and Kendi’s April 2012 wedding, reflecting on Lillian’s absence and the family that has formed around her legacy. He participates in photos, walks Jet down the aisle, and shares an emotional father–daughter dance, recognizing their reconciliation and the grace that allowed him to be present.
Summary
At Nana’s house, Ryan observes Davis and Jet smiling with Lillian’s eyes as Lillian’s grandchildren practice their roles for the wedding. He notes his task is planning the rehearsal dinner and, overwhelmed by grief and memory, thinks of buying liquor on the way home.
On the wedding day in April, the ceremony is held in a small chapel with an arched wooden ceiling and red pews. Ryan arrives early for family photos per Shauna’s instructions and is struck by the presence of Davis and his adoptive parents, thinking about what they and Lillian gave each other and the irreplaceable bond with a first parent.
With no immediate duties after photos, Ryan wanders the grounds, noticing rosemary and a blackbird, and offers prayers for Jet and Kendi. He speaks to God and to Lillian, feeling her in the camera clicks, the bride’s smiles, and the children’s sneezes. The blackbird’s flight calms him.
The ceremony reflects Jet and Kendi’s simplicity. Ryan remembers Lillian’s pregnancy with Jet and advice from his own mother that babies are simple, not easy. Seeing Jet in her wedding dress, he recognizes Lillian’s gentleness and Jet’s own fierceness. Jet wears her hair down, carries lilies, and pairs her dress with sneakers marked with drawn diamonds.
Liam walks proudly as ring bearer, followed by Marigold scattering rose petals. The music begins, the congregation stands, and Ryan formally gives Jet away, acknowledging the tension between that gesture and his past failures. During the vows, he experiences abdominal pangs that Michael notices; Michael steadies him with a hand on his shoulder.
At the reception, Shauna and Kendi first dance to Carole King. For the father–daughter dance, Jet chooses the Beatles’ “Here, There and Everywhere” despite her belief that Abbey Road is the better album overall. Ryan takes Jet’s hand, recalling her stubborn first steps he missed and the years they lost.
As they dance for the first time, Ryan cries and apologizes. Jet answers, “Now we’re here,” signaling forgiveness and their present reconciliation. Ryan reflects that, despite deserving exclusion, he has been granted grace to be included in her wedding and life.
