Part Six: Do Not Pretend that This is Love — Chapter VII
Overview
Captured in Occupied France, Addie learns her curse does not protect her from imprisonment and violence, only from being remembered. Desperate, she finally uses the wooden ring to summon Luc, and his arrival stills the prison long enough for him to free her. Luc spirits Addie to Boston, then disappears, leaving her rescued but indebted.
Summary
In Occupied France in November 1944, Addie LaRue is thrown into a prison cell near Orléans after being caught smuggling secrets. German soldiers beat her and taunt her, and Addie realizes too late that being forgettable is not the same as being safe; the soldiers do not need to remember her to imprison or kill her.
Exhausted, injured, and desperate, Addie thinks of the life she could have had in Boston and of the stubborn pull that keeps bringing her back to France. She also discovers the wooden ring is still with her despite being searched and having it taken, and she weighs what it would mean to use it after decades of refusing.
Fearing what happened in Chicago and what Luc might demand, Addie nonetheless prays for the first time in centuries and slides the ring on. At first nothing happens, then a warm summer breeze cuts through the cell; the other prisoners and the guards fall unnaturally quiet and inert as Luc arrives outside the bars.
Luc mocks the ugliness of war and refuses the implication that he is aiding the Nazis, then pointedly asks how Addie plans to escape, waiting for her to beg. Addie tries to maintain pride and insists she will find a way, but panics when Luc turns to leave and calls after him.
When Addie surges against the door, the lock gives way, and she stumbles into Luc’s arms. Shadows swallow them, and Luc pulls Addie through the dark to Boston at sunset, leaving her shaken but free—yet when Addie looks up to thank him, Luc has already vanished, and she knows this rescue will carry a price.
